Book Interview on January 2011
Hi Alexandra, thanks for taking the time out to answer a few of our questions regarding your latest release, DEVOURED BY DARKNESS. We do admit we can't ever get enough of your Guardians!
Q: How would you describe DEVOURED BY DARKNESS? What would you share with new readers as a way to entice them to your series?
DEVOURED BY DARKNESS continues the saga of the Guardians of Eternity, strong, skilled, seductive vampires chosen to protect—and to destroy. These Guardians will risk anything to fulfil their duty, and satisfy their desires…
Q: How did you come up with the idea behind the storyline in DEVOURED BY DARKNESS?
The story began in the previous book, Beyond the Darkness, where Tane was introduced as a Charon (vampire assassin). I knew I wanted his story to be next and when Laylah disappeared from the tunnels, I had to send him in pursuit. I also wanted to up the ante on the storyline running through the Guardian novels, so I have an ongoing thread of a looming battle with the Dark Lord that I hope adds tension for the readers who have been with the stories from the beginning and yet allows people to pick up the book and enjoy it alone. It's always a fine balance!!
Q: One of the things I found interesting about Laylah and Tane was that they both understood what it felt like to be feared and alone, never feeling accepted or trusted. When deciding which of your characters you wanted to pair up together as a couple, did Laylah and Tane seem like a natural choice to you or did you originally have them paired with someone else?
They were a very natural choice!! I knew from the moment that I created Tane he would have to have a strong mate who could understand his vulnerabilities and help him learn to trust again! I also wanted Laylah to have her own weaknesses that she had to overcome. :) Giving her a baby to protect forced her to allow Tane to help her, even when she wanted to remain hidden from the world.
Q: Sounds great! A further question--when developing Tane and Laylah's characters, was there something specific you had in mind or did they slowly create themselves as you wrote the story? Who was easier to write?
Laylah to me was at heart a mother, so she was very easy to write! Like Laylah, I didn't grow up dreaming of becoming a wife and mother; I always planned to be a career woman. :) Then the boys came along and I can't imagine my life without them. Tane was more difficult, but I loved discovering the wounded man beneath the tough vampire assassin! I wanted him to be strong, but able to open his battered heart to his mate.
Q: If you were to close your eyes right now and describe how you saw Tane, what would you say and why? How about for Laylah?
My first image of Tane is a beautiful, lethal weapon with the grace of a dancer and the skills of a Polynesian warrior. Honey gold, exotic, yet dangerous. While Laylah is a kick-ass bundle of energy with spiky crimson hair and dark eyes that hint at her fierce determination.
Q: Please share one of Tane's and Laylah's secrets that would give readers a deeper insight into who they are.
Tane once sacrificed everything for a woman he loved. Laylah has secretly longed for a family to call her own.
Q: There were so many great scenes in DEVOURED BY DARKNESS. One of my favorites was when Tane and Laylah first met in the tunnels and Tane came across as this deliciously seductive alpha warrior. I remember feeling like I wanted to pull him out from the book--the scene was giving me tingles. What was a favorite scene for you of Tane that made you think "Oh my goodness, this man is incredible"?
I actually love the first scene as well. I wanted to make sure the reader fell in love with Tane and I wanted him to be the one that Laylah chose to help her save the world.
The chill thickened, the danger a tangible force in the air. Then, the shadows directly before her stirred, and the vampire slowly became visible.
Laylah reeled, feeling as if she'd just been punched in the gut.
All vampires were beautiful. And sexy.
Wickedly, indecently sexy.
But this one…
Reminding herself to breathe, Laylah allowed her gaze to skim over the elegant features that revealed his Polynesian ancestors, lingering on the slanted eyes that were a brilliant shade of honey and the inky black hair that had been shaved on the sides, leaving the top to form a Mohawk that fell past his broad shoulders.
Her gaze lowered, that vicious awareness only intensifying.
The aggravating creature was wearing nothing more than a pair of khaki shorts, leaving his body on full, wondrous display. Her fingers actually twitched with the desire to inspect the smooth muscles of his chest. Or down the flat plane of his stomach.
No doubt aware of her helpless response to his sensual beauty, the demon stepped far too close, his fingers casually stroking along the curve of her neck.
"Have you never been told the dangers of provoking a vampire?" he murmured.
A chill inched down her spine, but she forced herself to meet his hypnotic honey gaze.
"Do you intend to drain me?"
His lips twitched. "Tell me about the child."
"Is it yours?" He paused, his fingers drifting to the pulse that hammered at the base of her throat, an intense concentration etched on his beautiful face. "No. Not yours. You are as pure as an angel."
Genuine fear speared through her heart. Damn the interfering leech.
"Leave me alone," she breathed.
The honey eyes darkened with a dangerous hunger. Laylah wasn't sure if it was for blood or sex.
Q: DEVOURED BY DARKNESS was part of a larger storyline in the Guardians of Eternity series. Does Tane and Laylah's involvement end here or is there a chance we'll get to see them in future books?
They'll definitely make an appearance in future books, but they probably will only be secondary characters. I intend for their child to have a future role ;-)
Q: Wow. Can't wait for that, but it's really so so bad of you to bait us like this. :) When all is said and done, what is your hope and wish for Laylah and Tane?
I wish for peace for them. They have both suffered through pasts that would have destroyed most people and they have earned their right to settle down and grow old together!! And of course, when you have a child, peace becomes far more important.
Q: What can we expect from you in 2011?
Uriel's story will be in an anthology called ‘Supernatural' with the fabulous authors Jacquelyn Frank, Larissa Ione and G.A. Aiken…I'm pumped!! It will be released in September 2011. That will be followed by a full length novel BOUND BY DARKNESS, which is Ariyal's story that will be released November 2011!
Thanks so very much for this wonderful opportunity!!
