Now here's a question for you. I always tell people they don't have to enjoy reality shows to enjoy Sink or Swim, as the book starts when the show is over, but I'm just curious:

What do you think of reality TV shows? Love them? Hate them? What's your favorite show?

Leave your response to be entered in the drawing for one of 3 Smashwords downloads of Sink or Swim.

Here's a second question. Since Twenty-Five Years Ago Today is about a newspaper in a state of transition (a small independent paper that's becoming more corporate run), how do you get your news? Do you subscribe to a daily newspaper? Do you read local weekly papers? Read newspapers on the Internet? Or do you prefer to watch the news on TV?

Post your response, and you'll be automatically entered to win one of 3 Smashwords downloads of my other book, Sink or Swim. (You'll get an entry for every comment or question you leave during my chat.)

That's a good point, CarolAnn. As a former reporter, I can attest that you have to read what's in the newspaper with a critical eye. Sometimes reporters make mistakes that editors don't catch, and unfortunately sometimes editors slant the story to have the big page one headline - ie. they'll interview 7 people outside a convenience store and then do a big front page story on how the majority of a town feels a certain way on an issue! Almost every time I've been interviewed in a newspaper for my books, they've gotten something wrong. TV tends to sensationalize so viewers have to be careful about buying into hype, but if you're just looking for the latest news, TV pieces are short so they have less time to get it wrong.

I prefer to watch the news on TV (BBC News) because I tend not to trust what's written in the newspapers unless I'm reading a reputable paper such as The Times or Guardian.

Oh coupons, I love coupons, Tracey! Luckily my mom gives them all to me! That is a definite benefit of a print edition. And I love the Thanksgiving edition, with all the ads. That's a must-buy. (though usually someone else will bring it over.) You can read the Thanksgiving ads online now, but I just don't like doing that - it's much easier to flip through printed ads.

I'm back again and thought I'd give a little of my background. I started my writing career as an obit writer and editorial assistant for a small daily newspaper, and later became a reporter. This inspired Twenty-Five Years Ago Today, which is set at a newspaper.

My college major, however, was exercise science. I discovered after graduating that working in this field wasn't for me, but all's well that ends well! I worked briefly in a health club during college, and worked my health and fitness interest into Sink or Swim, which is about Cassidy Novak, a personal trainer who works at a health club (when she's not appearing on reality shows or getting stalked!)

I worked as an accountant for awhile (yeah, that was my majore) but now I work in the IT field. I'd rather stay at home and read, though!

I got out of the field but it did lead into what I'm doing now so it's good.

And here is an excerpt from Sink or Swim.

Cassidy sat poised in her chair as former contestants filed onto the soundstage at WBC in New York. Together, the studio audience and television viewers had watched the recorded footage of her walking the plank. Gabriel would now interview the competitors from the inaugural season one final time. More importantly, he would announce her prize. If it erased most of her debts, then it would at least make this whole embarrassing experience worthwhile. Cassidy's heart kicked in her chest and sweat moistened her brow.

As one of her old teammates entered, her heart rate skyrocketed for a different reason. Josh Sanchioni slid into a bucket seat, carrying himself stiffer than normal in his sharp gray suit. Studio lights caught his sunbleached strawberry blonde waves, brightening the reddish gold tints. Cassidy slipped her gaze to his leather shoes. If Josh hadn't been engaged, they could have been an item. Instead, they'd been good friends until that
