Curator Dr. Louisa Hancock left behind Maine and her troubled past for Philadelphia and a job at a prominent museum. Just when it seems that Louisa's new life is safe from her dark secrets, the body of a museum intern is found—the victim of a brutal and baffling murder.

Louisa realizes this is no random crime. And when another intern goes missing, the abduction is linked to the only man who has ever tempted Louisa's heart—Conor Sullivan, the sexy owner of a Philly sports bar. Louisa's past has taught her to be wary, but her heart refuses to believe Conor is guilty.

Now Conor and Louisa must dodge a police investigation—and their growing desire—as they race to find the real killer before another girl turns up dead. But trusting Conor could be deadly, especially as the evidence against him mounts…and as a merciless killer targets Louisa as the next victim.

MIDNIGHT BETRAYAL is a thrilling murder mystery with some romance and unexpected plot twists to keep you fully engaged in the story.

Dr. Louisa Hancock has moved from Maine to Philadelphia after a scandal drove her from her previous job. Louisa is enjoying her job as museum curator and is starting to fit in with her new co-workers when one of the museum's interns turns up dead. To make matters worse, the crime seems to have been committed in a ritualistic manner using a museum artifact. Before anyone can deal with this piece of bad news, another of the museum's interns, Zoe, goes missing. Louisa takes it upon herself to try to find the girl, and in doing so ends up in the last place the girl was seen--Connor Sullivan's bar.

Louisa and Connor met previously in Maine when Connor was helping his sister out, and the initial attraction is still there. Because Connor was the last person to see Zoe alive, he becomes a suspect in her murder. Now Connor and Louisa are working together to find Zoe before it's too late and clear Connor of any wrongdoing in the process. When it becomes apparent that Connor is being set up and that Louisa may be the murderer's next target, the two have to work fast.

To further complicate matters, Connor is being hunted by a gang and Louisa is being stalked by a man from her past. Can they find the true murderer before it is too late?

While this book is the third in a series, it was readable, understandable, and enjoyable as a standalone novel. Not having read the first two books in this series there was some character back story that was missing, but not enough to detract from this great plot. There was a lot going on in this book and, at times, I worried that perhaps some stuff was just being added as filler. However, as the plot unfolded, I really felt like all the elements worked well together and they all enhanced the mystery.

Aside from the kidnapped and murdered girls, there is Connor's unexpected involvement with a neighborhood gang and the unexpected arrival of Louisa's aunt and a man from Louisa's past she wants nothing to do with. And behind all of the murder and mayhem, there is a relationship slowly budding between Connor and Louisa, both of whom have past relationships that have made them cautious when it comes to love. All of these elements kept the story moving quickly and made for a dynamic and intriguing plot. The strong and determined main characters were supported by a cast of characters that were mysterious, pleasant, entertaining, and villainous.

This book kept my interest piqued, surprised me with unexpected plot twists, and satisfied me with emotional breakthroughs that led to self-discovery and happiness. I will definitely read others in this series.
