Contemporary Romance, Mainstream fiction

Sasha Palmer, a travel writer, never stays in one place long enough to find even the possibility of love. The baggage of her family keeps her closed off from everyone, but one day, love finds her in the form of strong arms, wrapping around her, and pulling her to safety from oncoming traffic. One look at Rome, and she's a goner.

Roman "Rome" Valentin is a killer … and a good one at that. He leads a life he detests, full of self-loathing until the day he meets Sasha. She barrels into his life and steals the heart he didn't know he still had … and then she vanishes.

Their two families have been at war for decades. Will a chance meeting and a passionate growing love end the bitter feud or spark a battle that may destroy them all?

"Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean."

Well, thankfully, in this story, we do get our happily ever after, but on our way there, so much sexy, romantic fun.

When Sasha meets Rome, he's her knight in shining armor, as he saves her from potential injury. They hit it off instantly because who isn't attracted to a soaking wet person in the middle of Verona; and from there, begins a whirlwind romance that lasts until Sasha gets a peek at the contents of his wallet and realizes who he is and then promptly disappears.

One might think that was the end of it but Elena Kincaid does a marvelous job of reintroducing us to the winsome couple who meet again under inauspicious circumstances and are now faced with what to do about their respective families for they have been at war for…reasons that come out in the story.

Overall, this is an easy read. If you love mob romances, this one hits all the right buttons, progresses smoothly, and doesn't end with anyone taking poison.

If you're looking for an entertaining way to spend the afternoon or evening, then look no further than IN FAIR BRIGHTON.

BOOK INTERVIEW on March 2018
Interview by Laura

Hi Elena, welcome to The Romance Reviews, and let's talk about your recently published book IN FAIR BRIGHTON, the 1st book in the Star-Crossed Mafia series.

Q: Where did you get your inspiration for the Star-Crossed Mafia series? How are the books tied together?

I've always loved Romeo and Juliet and when my two main characters popped into my head, the two of them reminded me of a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, although my couple does not meet the same tragic end. The series will continue with the star-crossed theme, and the characters will all somehow be connected through these rival mob families from Brooklyn. I've already introduced the readers to my next two leading men in book one.

Q: How did you come up with the title of the first book, IN FAIR BRIGHTON?

All of the titles in this series are taken from the prologue of Romeo and Juliet with regards to how they fit with the story. In this case, I substituted Brighton for Verona… In fair Verona, where we lay our scene… It fits perfectly since this first book really does lay the scene for all subsequent stories.

Q: Please tell us about heroine Sasha Palmer. What in her past shaped her to be the person that we meet in the story?

Sasha's had a tough life. Being the daughter of one of the most powerful mob bosses had on one hand put her life in danger on a regular basis, and on the other, had her living a very sheltered life, filled with bodyguards and very little interaction with anyone outside of her tight circle. And then she suffered a tragedy at sixteen years old, which I won't spoil, but it drove her even further into herself.

Q: How about Roman Valentin? How did you come up with his character?

Roman "Rome" Valentin is my Romeo. He's an assassin for his father, also a mob boss and just as powerful as Sasha's father. I wanted Rome to be good at his job, but it was important for me that he hated it. He came to a point where he could no longer rationalize that just because he was the killer of killers, it didn't mean taking lives wasn't starting to suck out his own. Like Sasha, he'd also been sheltered in a way, and born into a life he didn't choose.

Q: How is their first meeting like?

Like Romeo and Juliet, it was a chance meeting, pretty much love at first sight. Here's a little teaser:

She looked up at the tall, brunet male, stunned by the color of his greenish-gray eyes, and nodded as droplets of water rolled down his face. Her heart still beat frantically, leaving her breathless and unable to speak just yet. When she finally managed to catch her breath, she said, "I heard … I thought I heard a gunshot."

His face turned serious, concern written on his handsomely rugged face, his well-defined jaw tense. "No, sweetness. Just a Vespa backfiring. With so much going on in the world, I don't blame you for thinking that."

Sasha inhaled deeply and then noisily exhaled, slowly feeling her heart rate return to normal. "Thank you for saving me." She managed to give the stranger a shaky smile.

His answering smile nearly took her breath away.

Q: Why were their two families at war for decades?

I don't want to give too much away, but basically, there are several rival mob families and Rome and Sasha's are the two most powerful. Both sides had each other's blood on their hands, but at one point there had been a truce, a shaky one, but still a truce and then something happens to break that truce and escalates matters almost to the point of no return.

Q: Can't wait to know what that is! What makes them perfect for each other?

Some of it is commonality. They had a similar upbringing and both were thrust into a lifestyle that was pretty much forced upon them, and they each tried in a sense to rebel from what they were. But it was their intense physical and emotional connection, their immediate pull to one another that really sealed their bond.

Q: What for you is a romantic moment between them?

The chemistry between these two was natural and easy for me to write and there were so many romantic and steamy moments between them. Their first kiss, a little tamer than their next kisses. ;), is a turning point, in that I think they both start to realize there may no turning back on their growing feelings. Here's a little snippet:

He walked her to the front of her hotel, looking just as reluctant for the evening to end, and then he cupped her face in both hands this time, and kissed her. As soon as their lips met, she opened for him, and he took full advantage. The kiss was slow, their tongues and lips exploring, tasting, causing her heart to thump wildly in her chest. Stabs of desire coursed through her lower belly. She hadn't even realized she was fisting the front of his shirt until their kiss ended.

"Until tomorrow," he whispered while still cradling her face. He then skimmed his nose against hers and placed a chaste kiss on her lips, before releasing her.

Tomorrow couldn't come fast enough, she thought as she walked into her lobby alone, feeling his gaze follow her in.

Q: What kind of research did you have to do to write this book? Please share an interesting fact or unique behind the scenes experience.

Though I have been to Italy, I have never been to Verona. It's definitely up there on my list of places to visit. I did a lot of research on the city of Verona and Casa di Giulietta. A fellow author helped me out with the authentic Italian phrases and some local customs. I speak Russian, but since I grew up in the US, I had my mom help out with some of the grammar—translating form English to Russian in the correct grammatical way, basically. Like Rome and Sasha, when I speak, you would not detect even a hint of a Russian accent. It actually surprises some people when I bust out in fluent Russian.

Q: Please give us a sneak peek at book 2 in the series.

Book two is titled OF THESE TWO FOES. You meet my hero Nikita, Rome's cousin in book one, and you hear about my heroine Rose, Sasha's cousin. Their journey will also be far from smooth and the two of them will actually be their own biggest obstacle. The title pretty much says it all. I have this one outlined already and will hopefully be able to start on it soon.

Q: What's up next for you?

I have a release coming May 22, 2018. It's an anthology called Down & Dirty, featuring 22 authors. The theme is blue-collared heroes and the women they would do anything for. These men aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. I am so excited to be part of this amazing group of writers, all of whom am I completely fangirling over.

Sounds fun! *grin* Thank you for your time, Elena!
