BOOK INTERVIEW on October 2012
Interview by Laura

Hi Viola, we're glad to have you here at The Romance Reviews. Let's talk about your book.

Q: What's your inspiration for THE DOCTOR AND THE WAR WIDOW?

My travels inspired me to write the novel. I love London and Liverpool, two cities that played major roles in the book. I've travelled there several times. London is an extremely exciting city--steeped in history and filled with vibrant night life. I first went to Liverpool after my mother died. I've always been a Beatle fan, and I journeyed to Liverpool to see Julian Lennon's White Feather Exhibit, a tribute to his father. The exhibit resonated with me, and I found that Liverpool is also an exciting city, rich in history. I loved the town so much that I returned the next year.

Q: What research did you do in the course of writing this book? Please share a fascinating fact that you've uncovered.

Since this is a contemporary romance, my research centered around my travels. I learned a great deal about the cities my characters visited. For example, I learned that Liverpool was a great, proud port city. They have a wonderful maritime museum as well as a wonderful modern museum.

Q: Gasp! Internet dating is fraught with dangers. What made the heroine, Harley Michel, do this? Please tell us more about her.

Harley begins internet dating because her colleagues dare her to do so. Her husband died some years ago, and her mother has recently died. Her fellow teachers want her to meet someone.

Q: Good thing she was able to find a nice, safe handsome Egyptian doctor as a potential partner. What made him venture into internet dating to find someone? Please tell us more about him.

Abisi also is widowed and lonely. His first marriage to an aristocratic British woman wasn't happy, but he, like Harley, wouldn't do internet dating without some prodding. We learn later that he only went onto the site because he lost a poker bet.

Q: What's their most romantic moment?

Harley and Abisi's most romantic moment is also my favorite scene. While in Liverpool, Abisi proposes to Harley at the gates at Strawberry Field. As he proposes, a tour bus and other tourists gather around and start to cheer. I thought it was a sweet and funny moment.

Q: THE DOCTOR AND THE WAR WIDOW is also a multicultural/interracial book. How does it come into play? What kind of conflicts arises from it?

Harley and Abisi definitely have to address some cultural differences and preconceived ideas. Harley's husband died in Iraq, and she has to examine her own feelings about falling for a man who was reared in Islam. Abisi no longer practices his family's faith, but Harley is still grieving her late husband.

Q: Which character was the most difficult to write? Why?

Abisi's psycho ex-girlfriend was disturbing to write. I had to descend into a dark place when I wrote her.

Q: What's up next for you?

Red Rose Publishing has signed my mystery, and I'm tweaking a novel set in WWI.
