I am a writer of mm fiction. As Nephy Hart, I write erotic(ish) romance, as Cheryl Headford, I write young adult, with an element of romance.
I was born into a poor mining family in the South Wales Valleys. Until I was 16, the toilet was at the bottom of the garden and the bath hung on the wall. My refrigerator was a stone slab in the pantry and there was a black lead fireplace in the kitchen. They look lovely in a museum but aren't so much fun to clean.
I've always been a storyteller. As a child, I'd make up stories for my niece and cousin and we'd explore the imaginary worlds I created, in play.
Later in life, I became the storyteller for a re enactment group who travelled widely, giving a taste of life in the Iron Age. As well as being able to run around hitting people with a sword, I had an opportunity to tell stories of all kinds, sometimes of my own making, to all kinds of people. The criticism was sometimes harsh, especially from the children, but the reward enormous.
It was here I began to appreciate the power of stories and the primal need to hear them. In ancient times, the wandering bard was the only source of news, and the storyteller the heart of the village, keeping the lore and the magic alive. Although much of the magic has been lost, the stories still provide a link to the part of us that still wants to believe; that's still there, somewhere.
Today, I've hung up my sword and live a quiet life (cue snort of laughter) with my son, three cats, dog and dragon in a small terraced cottage in the valleys. Yes. I am a Valleys Girl!
Writing is the air I breathe and I could no more stop writing than stop eating, another of my favourite activities. I throw everything I have into creating endearing characters and worlds for them to live in - some contemporary, some anything but.
Apart from my writing, I also enjoy art, even though I'm not particularly good. My latest obsession is making owls for Christmas presents.
