Oh, this is a story that just broke my heart! I've been waiting for Eve and Alex to get their HEA ever since we met them in the first Masters and Mercenaries book, The Dom Who Loved Me. It's obvious from the beginning that Eve and Alex love each other and are meant to be together, but I don't think I truly understood just how broken their relationship was until reading ON HER MASTER'S SECRET SERVICE. But my faith in Lexi Blake proved right on the money because I knew she would be able to take this heartbreaking tale and weave it into something so phenomenal I would not be able to put it down.

Alex and Eve were married. Both were in the FBI and then there was a case that went terribly wrong. It left Eve brutally attacked and Alex completely guilt-ridden because he didn't listen to Eve's warnings prior to the attack. It ultimately destroyed their relationship, leading to a divorce neither of them wanted.

Now, they are stuck in a situation that isn't helping either one of them, they work together, have a very distorted Dominant/submissive relationship, and they are both miserable. But when the threat to Eve returns again, Alex will stop at nothing to protect the woman who still holds his heart.

This was such an intense book, it was difficult for me to get through at times. I felt for this couple, deep down in my bones, and I just felt like it wasn't going to turn out the way that I wanted. I was so conflicted, but Alex and Eve are just so perfect for each other that I was kept glued to the page.

It is unusual for me read a romance about a couple who's already married, but I felt like it added a layer of connection for me that's not always there when a story is about trying to establish a relationship. On the other hand, I felt like the baggage that Eve and Alex had hindered their relationship. It was fascinating reading how the author handled it.

As I've come to expect from Lexi Blake, the story was intensely gripping, extremely emotional and very sexy. Whenever I get a Lexi Blake novel, I sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because I know I am going to be thoroughly entertained. ON HER MASTER'S SECRET SERVICE really struck a chord with me because I've wanted Alex and Eve to have their story told from the beginning of this series. I wondered why we hadn't gotten their story earlier in the series, but now that I've read this book along with the others that have come before it, I can appreciate the development of their story.

Anyway, I loved, loved, LOVED this story, and I cannot wait for this series to continue. Lexi Blake is a phenomenal author who has proven time and again that she has the perfect blend of story and sensuality.

Fair warning, ON HER MASTER'S SECRET SERVICE deals with emotionally charged issues like rape and physical and emotional abuse that may trigger some readers.

Six years ago, Alex McKay and Eve St. James were the FBI's golden couple, deeply in love until a madman kidnapped and tortured Eve, breaking her spirit, and their marriage. Now divorced but working together at McKay-Taggart Security, the former couple can only seem to connect when D/s play is involved, but Alex will take whatever Eve gives just to stay close to the love of his life. He's never forgiven himself for allowing Eve to be taken, and she doesn't know how to back out of the corner she's put herself into.

Now, Alex has a lead on the man who destroyed their lives, and when Eve sneaks in undercover with him at a BDSM club, they'll have to play the old D/s roles they haven't truly done in years. And when the madman from their past comes knocking once again, this time Alex will make sure he'll protect Eve with his life.

ON HER MASTER'S SECRET SERVICE is the 4th book in the Masters and Mercenaries series by the always brilliant Lexi Blake, and I couldn't love this story more! I've been craving Alex and Eve's story since I started this series…what could possibly be so terrible to break up a couple so obviously still in love with one another?!? Eve just needed her man, her Dom, after her release, while Alex threw all his efforts into finding the SOB and blaming himself. They couldn't ever reconnect like they once did, and now the only emotional release that Eve has is when she's in a BDSM scene. I think this passage sums up their relationship beautifully:

Their marriage had broken as surely as the glass on the ground, and neither of them had swept up the pieces. They kept trying to pick them up and fit them back together, but some pieces had shattered utterly and would never fit again. All they got for the effort was bloody hands and frustration.

It's just so sad, you can tell the two of them are still so in love but just can't reach that common place again. I loved the way they talked and got things out in the open, most of the time during sex. Like they couldn't bear to not be intimate at all times. As rough and raw and sometimes painful their sex was, it was also gorgeous and loving and sweet.

Eve was a pistol! Highly intelligent and caring, she's a great foil for Alex's more base emotionally charged attitude. ON HER MASTER'S SECRET SERVICE was yummy goodness, but it also gave a healthy dose of the feels. Another fabulous addition to the Masters and Mercenaries series!

Bottom Line: I'm so in love with the Masters and Mercenaries series and Ms. Blake! Her talent is phenomenal, and she has to have a badass team of editors around her, because I never spot a flaw in her books.
