Peter Thorton was a strict and demanding college professor turned professional director who excelled at giving acting lessons. Katherine Phillips was his shy and uncertain former student who became a professional actress under his tutelage. They fell in love, married, and won two Tony Awards before tragedy struck and the couple drifted apart until Kate discovered Peter kissing another woman. Unwilling to listen to excuses or waste any more time on a failed marriage, she demanded a divorce and moved out on the same day with her self-image in tatters.
Six months later, Peter Thorton, having heard that his darling Kate had become a short-tempered prima donna, decides to take matters into his own hands. Refusing to take 'no' for an answer, he proposes Kate work for him again in a college summer stock production of Kiss Me Kate.
Though Kate agrees to discuss Peter's proposal at her agent's New York office, she greets him behind a wall of cool disdain to protect her shattered heart. However, instead of the polite, distant stranger who'd been so agreeable and undemanding he'd let her spend the last two years of their marriage doing just as she pleased, she faced the resolute, dominant man she'd fallen in love with, and married. The Peter Thorton who had insisted she get enough sleep, eat properly and cease her destructive habits, or pay the consequences of disobedience over his knee.
Hurt and angry, Kate is torn between tossing Peter's offer back in his face, and risking re-opening painful wounds by accepting, which would place her back under his tender, yet dominant care. Though far from ready to admit it, even to herself, Kate had gone terribly adrift without Peter's steady guidance to navigate her through the rocky shoals of depression. She felt anchored and protected within his safety net of limits and rules, needing the reassurance of the loving discipline he offered. However, another failure could push Kate overboard with little chance of survival.
