SUMMARY
Trial by Fire …

Three years ago LAPD Detective Scarlet Moreno and rookie cop Krista Hart were nearly killed during a botched sting operation. Now, they're best friends and partners in the Orange County private investigation firm of Moreno & Hart. But their routine assignments are anything but safe …

Crash …

Scarlet Moreno has her hands full with a cheating spouse case when the bartender at her favorite pub becomes a murder suspect. Worse, the detective in charge of the investigation threatens to arrest Scarlet for obstruction—even when she tries to give him valuable information. Scarlet risks her PI license and her life to find out the truth, absolve her friend, and track down a killer—with or without the help of the arrogant, mysterious Detective Alex Bishop.

And Burn …

Krista Hart is burned out on catching deadbeat dads and philandering husbands when a big-time criminal defense attorney hires her for a choice assignment: find the sole witness to murder the day before the trial. The case could be a boon for Moreno & Hart, but the witness is in hiding, someone is following Krista, and her own client is withholding information. The last person she wants help from is sexy investigator R.J. Flynn, but he claims he's willing to share intel—for a price. If she can solve this case, it'll elevate Moreno & Hart above being divorce voyeurs, but first she has to survive, with her life and heart intact.

CRASH AND BURN is a great two-author anthology from Allison Brennan and Laura Griffin featuring a new detective duo, Scarlet Moreno and Krista Hart.

In Crash by Allison Brennan, Scarlet Moreno was unwittingly dragged into an investigation when two murders happened near her residence, and she clashed with Alex Bishop, the detective in charge of the investigation. This novella dealt with the serious topic of date-rape drugs and the consequences it wrought on the victims and the people around them. The outcome is tragic and senseless, lives lost before they were even lived.

The story was well-plotted, the writing superb, and the topic relatable. The suspense had me on the edge of my seat, wondering what the truth of the events was. There was a bit of confusion at the start regarding the secondary characters, i.e. the group of kids involved, as there were seven of them. The chemistry between Scarlet and Alex was sizzling, and I can't wait to see their relationship, going forward. I loved that scene when Alex found out the bartender Isaac wasn't Scarlet's boyfriend. Totally hot!

In Burn by Laura Griffin, Krista Hart was hired by a defense attorney to find a missing witness. She finds excitement, death and more in her search, including friendly clashes with rival, R.J. Flynn.

This novella was a wonderful read as well, and the plot was more straightforward, easier to follow. We learn how female PI's are discriminated in this industry (as anywhere else), and Krista's determination to get coveted jobs and fees. I kept rooting for her to get one over R.J. in this case (as he had once swiped a witness from her under her nose before). I feel for her ambivalence, because while she wishes to get her due as she deserved, at the same time, she's also highly attracted to R.J. While it was fun to see their banter and their upping one over the other, there was a feeling of incompleteness because at the end, it still feels like R.J. scored this time around while Krista remained the underdog. However, I know this is merely a novella and an introduction into Krista and R.J., so I hope we get to see them as equal partners in future books, that they can truly work together. It would be fun to see the four of them (with Scarlet and Alex) involved in one case together and have one long story rather than two novellas. Hope the authors can think about doing that!

CRASH AND BURN is a compelling read that romantic suspense lovers shouldn't miss!
