What is it about men in breeches? Shona finds out her dream man turns out to be not at all what she expected.
When a man in tight buff breeches examines her with his quizzing glass and calls her Miss Bennet, Shona fears the Regency themed ball is going to be as awful as she predicted. But then she is introduced to the gorgeous Nick who ticks every box for her perfect man.
As Shona looks forward to her first date with Nick, her happiness is marred by some disturbing observations around her flat. She doesn't usually leave her blind rolled down that far, and she never keeps her bunny slippers tidily by the bed. And what is the man in the buff breeches doing lurking on the street outside?
As both men pursue her, Shona finds one makes her body quiver with desire, the other itch with annoyance. Then the men finally confront each other, and her life turns into a nightmare. Can her judgment regarding the male species really be so seriously flawed?

Meeting a modern Mr. Darcy while playing dress up at a Regency-themed ball is many a woman's secret fantasy, but how do you deal with that other guy? You know the one; the anti-hero who seems like an annoying impediment to your perfect budding romance with Mr. Darcy!
Notorious for picking the wrong men and finding herself in a bit of a dating slump, Shona Turner allowed her friend Lyn to coax her into renting a Regency-era ball gown and attending a themed ball attended by lovers of all things Regency and Austen. Not everyone in attendance quite had the era down, as some attendees were dressed more Victorian or Edwardian than Regency, but the most shocking costume belonged to a rather rude and snarky golden-haired man in the most indecently tight buff breeches that Shona had ever seen. Luckily, Lyn's boyfriend helped Shona avoid a lengthy staring contest with the man in the buff breeches by introducing her to his recent acquaintance Nick--a handsome and charismatic man that was the epitome of a modern day Fitzwilliam Darcy.
Despite Nick nearly sweeping her off her feet in a single evening, Shona can't seem to avoid running into the irritating and mysterious man in the buff breeches. It's almost as if he's stalking her and surely that's no coincidence. But nothing is as it seems and sorting out her feelings towards the debonair Nick and golden-haired Sam Salter has Shona, a woman with a terrible track record with men, giving some valid consideration to becoming a nun.
If you're looking for a quick but delightful escape that's a bit reminiscent of Bridget Jones' Diary with a hint of Jane Austen's wit and historical detail, you'll be sure to enjoy THE MAN IN THE BUFF BREECHES. Without giving the entire plot away, I can only relay that Susan Lodge has produced a cute, quirky short story that will charm everyone who is a dedicated Austen fan and finds George Wickham and Fitzwilliam Darcy equally fascinating in their own way until first impressions fall away to new revelations. Most fun!
