Wow!! I thought I knew how this story was going to turn out, but was I wrong. I could not believe the amount of twists and turns Ms. Leigh plotted in this story. I had no idea that when I started reading this story I was going to stay up until I was done reading it. I just couldn't put this book down.
I love the She Can series. The storyline is captivating. I love how the mystery in this story kept me guessing who the bad guy was and why they were doing what they were doing, who was trying to kill her and why all the people from her past were dying.
Abby Foster is a math teacher with a secret past. She moved from the New Jersey area to Pennsylvania to start her life again. Her mother has passed away and she hardly spent any time with her father. Three years before, she was kidnapped and almost died in a botched police investigation. She thought the case was closed, but it seemed her past had caught up with her...
Officer Ethan Hale has lived a hard life. His father passed away and now he found himself taking care of his mother and twin brothers. He was a police officer in New York City and now is a police officer in Westbury, where Abby lives. One night, he finds a woman going under in the icy waters of the river, and he rescues her. Something was off though, as she is not able to remember the last two hours of her life. Why? Was she drinking and driving or was she hiding something?
Abby can't remember what had happened. Was someone after her again? Was she going to have to move and start over in another state or city? She does not trust cops and she has a good reason. Now here is Ethan questioning her and getting in her personal space. When he is near, her blood begins to boil. As for Ethan, there is something about her that made him feel so protective of her.
The more they dig into her past and more bodies are discovered, he knows that someone is trying to kill her. Why? What is she hiding? He knows that her dad didn't come around. He also knows about her past relationship, but what is she not telling him?
There was one person that my heart ached for and that was Derek, a little boy who had a terrible life. His mother was an alcoholic and he did not trust the foster care system. He had already gone into the system once and things didn't go well. So now he keeps his head to the ground and stays under the radar of social workers and cops. The one safe place that he has is Abby's home, where he can find a warm place and something to eat. I felt so bad for him and wanted to pound this mother. I just wanted for Derek to have a safe, warm place to live in with people that would take care of him.
As for one of the funniest scenes, there is none other than that of Zeus and Sweetums. Zeus is Abby's mastiff and Sweetums is one scary, furious, hissing tomcat. Zeus is a friendly dog, but don't mess around with Abby because he will guard her with his life. Zeus was just trying to be friendly and he wanted to say hi to Sweetums, and let's say it didn't go well. Ethan's mom now had an excuse to clear the Christmas tree from the living room. I could not stop laughing; my stomach hurt so much.
SHE CAN HIDE is one of the best suspense/mystery romance reads that I have read this year. This novel is fast-paced and a real page-turner. The best thing that I love about Ms. Leigh's writing is her imagination in creating a fantastic read. The characters are interesting and I was able to connect with all of them. I really felt like I was with the characters in their world, as the description of the events were richly drawn.
I love how strong Abby is and how she doesn't frighten easily and how she was able to trust Ethan, even with her background. Then there is Ethan; he has a kind heart and is so wonderful. He is a man that any woman would want. The chemistry between Ethan and Abby is electrical and hot. They are perfect for each other.
I highly recommend SHE CAN HIDE, the fourth book in the She Can series. These books are standalone but I would recommend for readers to read all the books in the series. Read about the thrilling adventure that Abby and Ethan go through in order to be happy. Lots of secrets will be revealed and these secrets will leave you speechless.
