A creepy phone call, a sudden trip out of town and one ghastly mystery—with so much at stake, Evangeline finds herself having to step up in the pack for the first time.
Evangeline's life is pretty perfect. As twin sister to their alpha she is one of the most powerful female werewolves east of the Mississippi and, though she's never had to use that power, she likes the idea of it and the respect that position grants her. But when things seem off in the Maine pack and her brother sends her up there to check it out, she'll have to prove that she's not just a pretty face in designer clothes.
Add in someone she'd long forgotten, and his boyfriend, and this little business trip turns out to be far more complicated than she ever thought possible. For too long her life has revolved around jewelry and high heels, and when push comes to shove she'll have to show everyone, including herself, that she's the wolf for the job and has more than earned her place in the Pine Hollow Pack.

This series has so far focused on Liam, the third in the Pine Hollow pack, his human mate and their daughter. They have also focused on the Alpha and his finding of a human mate. Finally, this is the story about Evangeline, twin sister of the Alpha and second in command. I've been waiting for this one, and I wasn't disappointed.

Through the other stories in this series, Evangeline has come across as a spoiled brat, a shopaholic and not much else, and yet she always showed glimpses of more. In this story, we see her as a better, more rounded character. She's not totally likable still; she's not perfect, but more 'human'. Ms. Ricci has done a great job of writing a female character that is both feminine and strong, with enough vulnerability to make her likable and still be the Alpha Female.

In this story, she's sent to take care of a problem in another pack without any backup. The Maine pack captured a Prince, holding him hostage. There she meets Oliver, who has been kept as a slave to the Prince. The Prince's father is keeping Oliver's lover as hostage for the return of the Prince. Now Evangeline has to negotiate a trade, while keeping Oliver safe and getting his lover in trade. Who knew that Oliver's lover was someone she knew--an old lover come back, the one who broke her young girl's heart. Even though it was only one night, Nicholai is the one that got away. But now he has Oliver, so she won't do anything to come between the lovers. So she steps into her role as Alpha Female, hoping that will keep her heart safe.

The contrast between Evangeline, Oliver and Nicholai made them completely different individuals. Oliver is the lighter one in this trio, and yet he's the force that pulls them together. Nicholai is darker and more intense. Each one brought a different personality to the ménage and yet I had no problem seeing this work for the three of them. Although I was curious about Nicholai's forcefulness towards Evangeline; at times, it almost came across as a lack of respect of the Alpha Female of what would be his new pack. And yet it didn't really take away from the overall storyline.

This was the first story of Caitlin Ricci that I've read where there was a main female character and was a ménage as well. The integration of the three personalities was nicely done. This story is also the first that introduced the world outside of the Pine Hollow Pack. It was well written; the plot line and story easy to read. I'm curious to see where the series goes from here.
