A woman with magical abilities she tries to hard to conceal. A god who is tired of all of the sacrifices. When the world is in need of their help, can these two risk it all to foil the plans of another immortal who wants to rule the world?

Muriah La Deaux is a woman without family but with a strong connection to the past. She runs the bookstore her family has run for generations. Muriah works with customers to track down magical artifacts and her rare ability is a great help with the task. She is aware of the Night Walkers and their task to keep the world in balance. When she is drawn into one of their assignments, she has to risk revealing her abilities and letting someone get close to her again after all her personal losses. Muriah is a women that finds it difficult to trust and keeps her distance from the men she becomes involved with sexually. Her increasing feelings for Issa scare her and make her reluctant to commit.

Issa is one of the original Night Walkers and incredibly powerful. He is an immortal who has suffered greatly with having to sacrifice those he loves in order to protect humanity and keep things in balance. He is tired and prefers to keep his distance from everyone but the mission is too important for him to resist the call for help. The God of Chaos wants to control the Night Walkers and use them to control the world. If he gets control of the newest one, everything is in jeopardy. He is surprised by his feelings for Muriah. He has not had the desire to be with a woman in a century and now he feels intense passion for Muriah. Previous feelings for a woman have just led to pain so he is not eager for more heartache.

The author has created a new category of paranormal called a Night Walker. There is some discussion of how they are confused for vampires in that they are immortal beings that need blood, avoid the sun and sleep during the day. Their role is to provide balance across the world. Some of the Night Walkers are born and others are made. The oldest of the Night Walkers are considered gods and have to make judgements and deliver harsh punishments to those who seek to harm the natural balance in the world. I would definitely say that the Night Walkers are closer to vampires than any other paranormal but they also each have a spirit animal they can change into at will so there is a shifter component to their magic as well. It is not always clear exactly what their abilities are as many of them have different magical capabilities.

The author features a diverse group of characters in the story and the story moves back and forth among the characters with a greater focus on Issa and Muriah. The rapid changes can cause an issue if an author is not very careful with the transitions from narrator to narrator. It was handled very well and did not lead to confusion. I was impressed with the ability of the author to develop the other characters in very brief segments for those like me who have not read the other books in the series.

It is an interesting world of magical beings with enormous powers that devote their lives to preserving the balance in the world. This is book three in the series but you are able to jump into the series without an issue due to the skill of the author in developing characters. Muriah and her family have been part of this world for generations but never as closely as now when the world is most in need of her abilities. Issa is a god that is tired of the pain and heartache and is ready to let it all go when he encounters Muriah and gets a new reason to live. These two have encountered great heartache but still are willing to sacrifice to save others. The world of the Night Walkers is a world that will entice you to visit again with all its great characters, their incredible abilities and their devotion to saving others.
