If you like your heroes dominant and of the protective variety, and you enjoy a little suspense in your romance, then FOR HER PROTECTION by Amber Bardan may be a good pick for your next read. Particularly, if you also like scorching, hot, love scenes with a man who knows what he wants!
Charlize is having a tough day/week/few months! She meets Connor at the gym when he hauls her away caveman style after she nearly instigates a fist fight with two huge men who are jacked up on steroids. Later that day, she forgets her underwear and has to go to work feeling the breeze with just pantyhose alone for undergarments. On her way in, she gets decked by a picketing worker. Meanwhile she is also having a difficult time in her professional world, adjusting to her new role as CEO of her family's company, which is going through major turmoil. Not to mention that she has inherited this position due to her father's stroke and a short while later her uncle's passing to the same ill fate.
Connor is instantly attracted to Charlize, and he's pretty sure the feeling is mutual, even if she refuses to admit it, even to herself. Notwithstanding his failed seduction attempt at the gym, when he pinned her down to the exercise mat following a self-defense lesson/bet, he doesn't think twice about pursuing her again when he finds himself interviewing to be her bodyguard.
Charlize, however, has a bad past with men who want to control her. Therefore, notwithstanding how her body reacts to Connor, or what she lets him do to her physically, she isn't going to let her emotions fall into that trap again. Her career goals are paramount, and she's not going to give that up for a "neanderthal" who will eventually convince her to give it all up to wear a "frilly apron." So she pushes him away.
Connor is not your typical bodyguard though; he has detective training and owns his own security firm. When he determines that the problems at Charlize's firm go much deeper than she could ever have anticipated, and that, as a result, her well-being may be in danger, he refuses to take no for an answer. He also starts keeping secrets to "protect her." With Charlize's emotional hang-ups and the turmoil cluster that she finds herself in, can there possibly be a HEA for this couple?
Although I have to admit that Charlize did not start as my favorite heroine, she eventually comes around near the end. At the beginning she comes across a little too much like a man hater for my taste, but eventually you learn why. Additionally, once Connor starts working his de-stressing magic on her, one orgasm at a time, her character begins to evolve in a more positive direction.
I love books that combine a good hot romance with the action and uncertainty of suspense. There was a decent, if a little predictable, element of suspense and mystery surrounding the misfortunes of Charlize's family business in this plot.
The best part of this story, however, was Connor. I love alpha males who take charge and protect their women. Without a doubt, Connor fits that description perfectly (think "Dream Man" Kristen Ashley style)!
All in all, if you stick with this read through to the end, you will find that it's a generally enjoyable ride leading to an above average read!
