SUMMARY
For centuries, Lisette d'Alençon has been a warrior against the dark. She fights alongside her brothers and comrades. But when the dreams start coming, she can't bear to confess them to the Immortal Guardians' command. Dreams of a dark-haired man with soft eyes and brutal wounds, a man her heart aches for--and a man she knows has been declared a traitor.

Zach is an exile, a loner. He won't defend himself against false accusation or grovel to those who should have faith in him. But he'll damn sure defend the woman who kept him sane against a plague of supervamps that seems to have appeared from nowhere. The Guardians will blame him, and that will make Lisette suspect, too. With life, death and eternity on the line, who can they really trust?

Fans of Dianne Duvall's Immortal Guardians will rejoice in this fifth installment of her blazing, fast-paced paranormal series. Full of fascinating characters, a unique and wonderfully imaginative premise, and scorching hot relationships, this is a book that is thoroughly enjoyable in and of itself. While there is a great deal to savor here, there is no doubt that there is a great deal of action yet to come, as the band of Guardians grows even larger and more diverse, and their enemies grow ever more powerful.

Lisette d'Alençon is a very rare female Immortal Guardian, and has fought alongside her brother and their comrades for generations. But though she has been surrounded by respect and regard, Lisette has been alone after suffering heartbreak centuries ago at the hands of her human husband. Since then, there has been no one...until now.

Zach arrived at the Guardian's compound after turning his back on his own kind and suffering torture at their hands for his betrayal. Though uninvited and unwelcome, as soon as he sets eyes on Lisette, Zach knows there is nowhere else for him but near her. But when the Guardians are betrayed, and their secrets used to target them, their leader turns on Zach, convinced that he is the enemy. Zach refuses to grovel or beg for acceptance from anyone. He will do anything, however, to protect Lisette from the enemies that surround her, and take out anyone or anything that threatens the woman he has come to adore.

I've been fascinated by Zach since he first landed in this story, so I was thrilled to learn he was the hero of this installment. I am pleased to report that he lived up to all my expectations. Strong and quiet, and so utterly devoted to Lisette that nothing could keep him from her side. His best quality, however, was his refusal to change or suppress her need for action or desire to battle the Guardian's enemies in order to ensure her safety. Zach fought by her side, accepting Lisette for exactly who she was, and remained confident in her abilities from the first to the last.

This confidence, I am happy to say, goes both ways. Lisette's trust in Zach, and her calm acceptance of him and his past made for a remarkably strong relationship. It was refreshing to meet a heroine who knew the pain of loss and betrayal, but who didn't let that pain ruin her chance at love with a man who deserved it--and her. The hints that abound through this book about Zach's real identity were quite intriguing, and I am eager to learn more about him, and the deep ties that bind him to the Guardians and their history.

Though the connection between Zach and Lisette is tangible and their scenes simply scorching, there is a lot more going on in this book than their romance. The number of characters and story arcs at work in this story are many, and while that does make for some confusion at times, fans of this series shouldn't have too much difficulty navigating the twists, turns, and surprises that abound here. Maybe it is because of the complexity of this book that I found it a little slow to get going. However, once the plot found its tempo, I was hooked. The race to find the traitor who has endangered the Guardians is taut and full of revelations and secrets that kept the pages turning at a breakneck pace, and the connection between Lisette and Zach was so powerful that it was impossible to forget them.

It isn't often that a series unfolds and develops in a way that keeps readers' attention and expectations high through each and every installment, but Dianne Duvall has done a marvelous job thus far with her Immortal Guardians. I loved being introduced to other Guardians and loyal vampires, who spice up this series and will inevitably drive it forward, and will be thrilled to see what she is planning next. This is a totally different kind of paranormal series with characters that are varied, strong, and compelling, dangers that are very real and relationships that are completely engaging. As far as I am concerned, the sixth installment can't come fast enough!

I'm not sure if I would be aroused or scared to death if an almost seven feet man with wings decided to infiltrate my dreams, but Lisette loves it, kicking off her and Zach's Immortal Guardians love story.

After being captured and tortured relentlessly, the winged being named Zach escapes his binds, only to fall into the home of the Immortal Guardian woman Lisette d'Alençon. Lisette is immediately captivated back, and despite the warnings of the Immortal Guardian's leader, Seth, Lisette and Zach's attraction grows. Having been a loner for millennia, Zach is overcome with the emotions that the tiny fighter evokes in him, and he's equally shocked by the acceptance of her brethren Immortal Guardians, even Seth, when he finds out.

Seth knows that someone is amassing an army of super-strength vampires, and whoever that person is seems aware of Seth's weaknesses. Being led in various directions, Seth struggles to determine if one of his own is betraying him or if it's something more sinister. The addition of the incredibly powerful Zach to his family of Immortal Guardians gives them the necessary added strength to fiercely battle whatever is being led their way. While the men struggle to accept and trust one another, both men attest to the fact that they will protect Lisette from any harm, physical or emotional. Can Seth, Zach, Lisette and the rest of the Immortal Guardians find the traitor before it's too late and Armageddon is unleashed?

NIGHT UNBOUND is book 5 in the Immortal Guardian series, and while I occasionally had a bit of trouble with some of the background, I believe this can be read as a standalone novel. I'm not typically a fan of supernatural stories, and this book is such a thing from page 1 to 425. Between dark angels (Maybe? Not entirely sure what Zach and Seth are), aliens, vampires, super vampires and Immortal Guardians (with powers such as telekinesis, teleporting, dream walking, shape shifting, healing and much much more), NIGHT UNBOUND just had way too much going on to fully enjoy. The story was decent and well plotted out, however the myriad of abilities and types of characters in this book had me scowling in confusion the entire way through.

While there were some lighthearted humorous moments in NIGHT UNBOUND, the story was pretty bloody and gory, and the lack of passion made it that much more strange. While there was a lot of sensual foreplay, the actual sex was kind of glossed over, which was disappointing. Zach and Lisette had a decent love story, but honestly there was just so much going on that it was overshadowed by all of the other insanity that Seth's people dealt with.

I did enjoy the uncertainty of who the person was behind all of the strong vamps, and the interaction between several of the main and secondary characters was enjoyable, too. I don't know that I personally would pick up another book in this series, but for those who like their stories rich with description, violence, supernatural beings and suspense, this book may be right for you.
