SUMMARY
Melody Bennett's parents trampled on her teenage romance with a drifter ten years ago. He disappeared without a word of goodbyes on the night they had planned to run away together. Since then, she cast aside her foolish notions of happily ever after and worked hard alongside the hired help to care for the majestic horses on her family's beloved ranch. She refused to give love another chance and resigned to live her life alone.

Max Fortaine returned with a heart guarded by secrets and a sizable bank account that took blood, prayers and tears to fund. The cowboy disrupted Melody's peaceful existence with stolen kisses and a promise for more. After a lifetime of running, mistakes and regrets, he vowed to reclaim the only woman he ever loved… if only her overprotective father didn't stand in his way.

No one forgets their first love or the way it ended. In LIGHTNING OVER BENNETT RANCH, author Amber Daulton reunites a former pair of young lovers who parted due to circumstances beyond their choosing and she explores the reconciliation of past hurts and misunderstandings.

At seventeen, Melody Bennett fell in love with drifter Max Fortaine, a young man in his early twenties who'd found work on her father's ranch. Knowing their love was true, the young couple had planned to elope, but a brokenhearted Melody spent a lonely night at a motel waiting for Max before she finally realized he'd drifted out of her life like a thief in the night. And, more than a decade later, Melody still hasn't been able to entrust her heart to another. But upon learning that Max has returned to the area, she knows she's long overdue in confronting the man who disappeared and left her young heart in tatters.

Max Fortaine never got over Melody Bennett, but as a young man with nothing to offer but his heart, he'd allowed himself to be persuaded to leave the woman he loved behind. Yet, years of prudence and a goal of winning Melody back has driven him to return and set the record straight. And though he's not quite ready for a confrontation with Melody, this time the rancher's daughter refuses to be left wondering and waiting.

LIGHTNING OVER BENNETT RANCH, book two of The Ranch Collection, is a novella that's a fast read that I'd consider to be a clean romance, but with references to adult situations. Ms. Daulton had loads of potential as a romance writer and she quickly got to the heart of her tale, but I found myself wishing she'd been as detailed in character development as she was with describing settings and scenery. A little more embellishment of the angst and regret that lay between Max and Melody would have enhanced this old lover's reunited tale, but it was still a pleasurable form of escape for me during a few stolen weekend hours.

A LOVE STORY GOES ON A DIET
"Lighting Over Bennett Ranch" by Amber Daulton is the first cowboy romance I've read, and I found it quite an enjoyable read. The lightning in this story takes on several meanings, with the first being, the name of Melody's horse.

Lightning, in the form of love, is also what had first come into Melody's life at the of seventeen when she fell in love with Max[imilian] Fortaine, a drifter ranch her father had hired one summer. They had decided to run off together, however her father her naked with him under some hay in one of the paddocks on his ranch. Max disappeared without a word to Melody.

Now, eleven years later, Melody is alone. With Max's memory still in her mind, she's set her standards high before she'll allow another man to enter her life. The only man who succeeded had been Harvey Clausen, but with her catching him with another woman caused Melody to eliminate him as a possibility due to his being unfaithful.

Unbeknownst to Melody, Max has returned. Will the lightning strike again? Will Melody be able to rekindle the relationship she once had with him? Will Max still love her as he did before? And what will her father say this time, should she and Max get together again? The answers to these questions are in the book.

The shortest of this story, consisting of 51 pages, doesn't diminish amount of the emotions being generated. Gone are all the fluff and other nonessential items contained in almost every other story dealing with similar situations; which is why I'm giving it 5 STARS.
