It's amazing just how many reasons people could have to want an 80 year old woman dead! In DEADLY INFLUENCE, you'll have a tough time determining who's the good guy and who's the bad guy in this romantic suspense novel.

When the elderly and powerful matriarch, Meta Corning, begins receiving startling death threats and attempts on her life, she knows it's time to take action. She secretly hires Lisa Dixon, a bodyguard and former police officer, to pose as a nurse. Meta's grandson, Air Force Lieutenant Jay Corning, comes back to town to try and figure out what's going on with his grandmother, and is immediately suspicious yet intrigued by the beautiful woman caring for her. His brother and cousin don't want Lisa there, yet neither stand a chance against the powerful woman under Lisa's care.

Lisa can't figure out who wants the sweet Meta dead! She thinks of the woman as the grandmother she never had and will protect her with her life. Suspicious of all of Meta's grandsons, including the darkly handsome Jay, her ex-con neighbors, a land developer and even the church preacher, everyone has a reason for wanting Meta out of the picture. To get to the bottom of this mystery, Jay and Lisa will need to get over their suspicions of one another and learn to work together. But with extreme chemistry between them, will either be able to focus on the danger long enough to find out who wants Meta dead?

DEADLY INFLUENCE starts off with terrific suspense that carries the reader through this very well written storyline. Ms. Lakes wrote a wonderful who-dun-it novel that focused more on the cast of suspects rather than erotic interludes between Jay and Lisa. Though there were a few, they were tastefully written and more sensual than sexy (and at times, featured dialogue a tad bit cheesy). I liked that the plot was so tight that Ms. Lakes didn't feel the need to put in extraneous information into the dialogue or plot. It flowed so nicely and culminated into a well put together climax that surprised me.

The one thing I didn't care for was what happened AFTER that climax. The last 1/4 of DEADLY INFLUENCE felt unnecessary and frustrating. I don't want to give anything away, but I will say that it was irritating to have this story go on and on after the excitement was over. That said, the suspense definitely made up for some of the cheesy dialogue and frustration with the ending. I would read other works by this author.
