Livy notices him the moment he walks into the coffee shop. He's heart-stoppingly stunning, with a blue-eyed gaze so piercing she's almost too distracted to take his order. When he walks out the door, she thinks she'll never see him again. Then she finds the note he left on his napkin . . . signed M.
All he wants is one night to worship her. No feelings, no commitment, nothing but pleasure. Every defense mechanism Livy has adopted during her solitary life is at risk of being obliterated by this confounding man. He's obnoxious but well-mannered. He's a gentleman but aloof. He's passionate but emotionless. Yet the fascination is so powerful, Livy can't deny him... or herself.
M awakens something in Livy, something deep and addictive that she never knew existed -- and that she fears only he can satisfy. But she senses that behind the fast cars, fancy suits, and posh apartment, he's aching inside. To have him, body and soul, she'll have to brave his dark secrets. Delving into his world and breaking down his defenses become her obsession - an obsession that could shatter her heart beyond repair..

Wow! 5 "did I just really read that" stars for ONE NIGHT PROMISED! I would give it 6 stars if I could! This book is sexy, psychologically intense and suspense filled! I loved the unexpected twists and turns that Ms. Malpas built into the plot. Just when you think you have it all figured out, Ms. Malpas ups the stakes by revealing yet another astounding fact that adds exponentially to depth of this story.
Livy, at just twenty-four years of age, has had a tough life. Abandoned by her mother, she has been mostly raised by her grandparents, who also were devastated by her mother's betrayal. Her deep yearning to both understand, and distinguish herself from, her mother has shaped and dictated most of her life's decisions. As a consequence, to an outside observer, it appears that she has not experienced much in life. Both her grandmother and her gay best friend, Gregory, strive to change that, much to Livy's exasperation.
Then, one day "he" walks in to the coffee shop where she works. Devastatingly attractive, his "piercing," blue eyes captivate her and she is mesmerized, barely able to function enough to make his cafe americano just the way he likes it: "four shots, two sugars and topped-up halfway."
Never even giving her his name, she only knows from a note that he leaves behind for her that one of his initials is "M." Soon she starts encountering him in different settings and each time she is more entranced, until finally he is convincing her to act so completely out of character that even her friends don't know who she is anymore.
That's when he presents her with his proposition: all he wants, and all he can promise her, is 24 hours of utter bliss: to be worshiped and experience a pleasure beyond all of her possible dreams. Livy is not sure she can agree to such arrangement, but then, she is not sure she can dare risk denying his request either. As fascinated as she is by this mysterious, well-mannered man, who she is convinced only pretends to be a gentleman, she is perplexed. "M" is a conundrum, one that she wishes to unravel, but one that she knows she should stay far, far away from for her heart's own good.
While this book will undoubtedly be compared to the vastly popular, controlling billionaire stories that have arisen following the immense success of The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, and will no doubt appeal to this audience, ONE NIGHT PROMISED has so much more depth to offer. An ocean that I have only begun to explore with One Night Promised as there is still so much more waiting to evolve over the remainder of the trilogy. The ending here is so unexpected, and yet, vastly promising in its possibilities. I can't wait to read book 2 in the trilogy, Denied, which is presently scheduled for release this coming November!
