In a world of animal shifters and vampires, magic and the power of the mating bond will unleash a force that will consume three men body and soul.
Jared Grayson's werewolf clan is attacked by dragon shifters. In the melee, Zongxian Long, leader of the dragons, appears and stays the carnage. He and Jared instantly recognize the truth that each has found his mate in the other. Zongxian vows to return after he faces the judgment of his elders. He is, however, sentenced to forced hibernation and would only awaken upon Jared's death.
For two years, Jared waits in vain for Zongxian to show up but he never does. Keeping himself busy, Jared pursues his studies at MIT. One day, their Ecology teacher is replaced by Tomas Medina y Hernandez. Tomas is not a real teacher but a vampire and is tasked to kill Jared and all those who possess The Spirit of Gaia -- a powerful amulet. Instead of doing so, he kidnaps Jared and hides him because of the attraction he undeniably feels for the young werewolf. Tomas loses him later to his vampire superior. Meanwhile, Zongxian manages to awaken from his deep sleep. With the help of Tomas, he sets out to rescue Jared from his fanged captors.
I have encountered shifters in previous books but I have never met so many together nor have I learned about intermingling and mating bonds and how powerful it could be until now. This book was an eye-opener for me. How I wish I could have read the first three books in the series. Even if references to previous characters and situations were mentioned, I feel that this book can stand alone. Jared, Zongxian and Tomas' story is complete in itself.
Author Scarlet Hyacinth has managed to pull me into the story without confusing me. Once I got past who was who and who did what, I had a great time reading the book. In fact, everything happened so fast that I didn't realize I was done.
I also loved the fact that the setting here is contemporary and familiar so much so that I couldn't help but wonder for a second if shifters and vampires do really exist. If the story took place in a different world or time period, it would have still worked.
The three-way bond among Jared, Zongxian and Tomas was again a new experience for me. The pull among them was so strong and each accepted this fully without feeling in the least jealous or hateful of the other. One was not complete without the other two. If this bond were a numerical expression, I would translate it as 1 plus 2 is always equal to 1. It may be a mathematical impossibility but go figure.
Magic, paranormal romance and erotica made for a great combination in DRAGON'S BLOODMOON, the fourth book in the Deadly Mates series. Fans of the earlier books will surely have another great read in their hands.
