How do accept news of your imminent death? With grace? With rage? Do you fight it with everything you have?
Nadya has received a death sentence thanks to a bite from a genetically engineered werewolf. It is only a matter of time before her body gives out like all the others. She is determined to live life to its fullest. What she doesn't expect is to discover she has a mate.
Nadya lost her parents at a young age and was raised by her older sister, Sasha. In the previous books in the series, you learn that her sister was bitten by a jaguar shifter and forced to be an assassin for their organization. Nero is an organization that wants women with psychic abilities so they can breed them to have children with enhanced abilities. Nero was after Sasha when they learned of Nadya and she was bitten in an attempt to trap the assassin. As an empath, she can sense the feelings of others and would be a perfect candidate for their program. Since the attack, it is more comfortable for her to be around Gareth who controls his emotions. The others are too worried about her and it doesn't help the situation. It shocks them both when they realize they are mates.
Gareth is in great pain which he tries to hide. He is a werewolf and lost his twin brother in the attack led by Nero to get at his pack. He just wants to run away from all the memories and start over. It is his plan until he realizes Nadya is his mate. While he should be thrilled to find his mate, he can't imagine dealing with another loss when she dies from the complication from the bite. He just wants to run but his wolf won't let him get far. Nadya needs him. He wants to do the right thing but is lost in his pain. I can understand his desire to want to escape and his later understanding of what he needs to do for Nadya. Gareth is in a tough place and the author is very good at making the reader understand the complexity of his feelings.
The other books in the series had more action while this one is more intimate in its focus on Nadya and Gareth. It is a romance at its heart. Nero is still out there but their real fight is to save her from the effects of the bite. Nadya is young but very mature. She has so much grace in her acceptance of what is happening. Nadya is not angry or looking for someone to blame. She is willing to do what needs to be done to try to be cured. She loves Gareth and doesn't want to cause him pain. Nadya struggles with her needs and what is right for him. I admire her for her dignity at all times regardless of the situation. The author provides background information for those new to the series. I do recommend you read the other books in the series as well to get a fuller understanding of the story.
It is a sweet story of a romance that started under the worst circumstances but brings the best ending possible. This is a very intimate fight against an enemy from within. Nadya is facing death with grace and wants to live life to its fullest. She refuses to give up easily. Her discovery that Gareth is her mate brings her joy until she realizes how much pain he is in and her death could compound it all. Gareth learns more about himself and recommits to being a mate to Nadya. This is a great romance featuring characters that triumph over pain and embrace a future together.
