Book 1 of On the Ropes
Contemporary Romance, New Adult

Sound is an abstract concept for most people. We spend our lives blocking out the static in order to focus on what we believe is important. But what if, when the clarity fades into silence, it's the obscure background noise that you would give anything to hold on to?

I've always been a fighter. With parents who barely managed to stay out of jail and two little brothers who narrowly avoided foster care, I became skilled at dodging the punches life threw at me. Growing up, I didn't have anything I could call my own, but from the moment I met Eliza Reynolds, she was always mine. I became utterly addicted to her and the escape from reality we provided each other. Throughout the years, she had boyfriends and I had girlfriends, but there wasn't a single night that I didn't hear her voice.

You see, meeting the love of my life at age thirteen was never part of my plan. However, neither was gradually going deaf at the age of twenty-one.

They both happened anyway.

Now, I'm on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.
Fighting for my career.
Fighting the impending silence.
Fighting for her.

Every night, just before falling asleep, she sighs as a final conscious breath leaves her.

I think that's the sound I'll miss the most.

Each book in this series can be read as a standalone.

5 "Fantasy Battles Reality and Love Wins" Stars! Grab your tissues and plan an uninterrupted evening because once you start this emotional, first love romance, chances are you will not be putting it down until you devour it all up! This is new adult romance at its finest, with the added twist that it deals with some very real, potentially life crippling adversities, including poverty, abuse and physical disabilities. Incredibly well written and engaging, FIGHTING SILENCE not only had me glued to my Kindle but it actually made me cry at a number of key points where Aly Martinez really drove home just how unfair life can be at times, and just how resilient and strong our human nature is when it comes to protecting those we love. In the end, Ms. Martinez leaves us with a very empowering and satisfying message: love can conquer all!

At only thirteen years of age, Eliza Reynolds and Till Page, both trying to escape their terrible, worthless parents, find a much more pleasurable fantasy in a condemned apartment that becomes their secret hideaway. For five years they spent nearly every night and most weekends in that apartment together where they forged a unique bond.

For Eliza the apartment was her "own private fortress". A place she could whisk away to to get away from her fighting parents, who practically didn't even notice she existed. While it hurt, Eliza fortified herself by gathering art supplies to pursue her favorite pastime of drawing and by furthering her plans for the future which included moving away to college and starting a new life as soon as she graduated high school.

For Till, the apartment signified a place where he could go to to escape his problems. In addition to his father who was willing to sell him out at the drop of dime, at just thirteen years of age, Till learns that he has a condition that will eventually render him deaf. Till, however, doesn't have the luxury of eventually being able to run away to a new life. Instead he has taken it upon himself to fill the void that his worthless parents have left by protecting and providing for his two younger brothers.

Interestingly, their relationship remains platonic for many of those years. While each is no doubt attracted to the other, they maintain their own separate lives outside of their apartment sanctuary. Moreover, when those feelings are pushed to the forefront, they must confront the devastating reality that caving in to those desires could just cost them the one thing neither is willing to lose, their special friendship which they have come to expect as the one constant that they can always rely on.

Unfortunately, however, the stark contrasts in their chances for a bright future is only exacerbated when Till misses graduating on time. Working for minimum wage and with the reality that Eliza is moving out of walking distance to go to college, Till makes the hardest decision of his life and decides to set Eliza free, devastating them both in the process.

But one night, when Till again hits rock bottom, he goes seeking the only person who could set the world right again for him. Eliza eventually lets him in, but they again become even more resolute in their determination to keep their relationship to one of strictly friendship. But can true love be denied? Moreover, as their lives become even more intertwined as they learn to deal with even more complex adult issues, and real life continues to bombard them with seemingly unconquerable odds, can there possibly be any future in which a HEA reigns victorious?

What a fantastic read! This was my first book by Aly Martinez and I am sold! Any author that can keep me reading until 5am, while I alternate between laughing, crying and sighing, deserves a top spot on my auto-read list! Now June, which is when the next installment in the On the Ropes Series is scheduled to be released, can't come fast enough! I can't wait to hear Flint's (Till's middle brother's) story!
