Be Careful What Secrets You Dig Up
When a young girl's body is discovered in a shallow grave on a farm outside of Ripley, Ohio, FBI Agent Kendal McNally returns to her estranged hometown to investigate. The similarities to another murder on the same farm seventeen years earlier is unnerving, not to mention the fact that she helped put her best friend's father behind bars for the crime. Her search for the truth puts her in the middle of a serial killer's graveyard.
Reed Harvey's life was turned upside down when his father was convicted of murder. It didn't help that Kendal had been the key witness in the trial or that she turned her back on him and their friendship. Now she has returned to investigate another murder, living in an apartment above his restaurant and making him remember what almost was.
Despite their pasts, Kendal and Reed turn to each other as Kendal's investigation unravels a web of lies in a town where everyone thought they knew everyone's business. And when another girl goes missing, Kendal will unearth a devastating secret that may put an end to the murders—except one. Hers.

A murder, a probable serial killer and a long lost love, SHALLOW GRAVES tells the story of FBI Agent Kendal McNally and the destruction of a strong friendship and young love that ended with a gruesome murder seventeen years ago. Fans of atmospheric suspense and second chance love stories will enjoy this novel by Christina Wolfer.
When Kendal McNally returns to Ripley, Ohio, she knows she can't ignore her past any longer. Seventeen years ago, Kendal testified against her best friend's father in a murder case. Now young girls are turning up dead with the same MO but the alleged killer is still behind bars. Either Kendal made a big mistake seventeen years ago or a new killer is on the loose.
Reed Harvey lost his best friend and first love when she testified against his father in court and helped put him in prison for life. During that troublesome time, Reed needed Kendal more than ever and now he's hardened his heart completely. When Kendal comes back to Ripley, Reed inevitably runs into her but even with new clues about the murders being revealed, Reed doesn't know if he can ever open himself up to Kendal again.
SHALLOW GRAVES manages to tell an intriguing suspense story while also combining it with a captivating romance and backstory about Kendal's childhood and the death of her mother. Christina Wolfer creates a fantastic atmosphere in this book which makes it come to life and completely drew me in. The characters have a depth that makes them very approachable and realistic. While the suspense plot is not completely unpredictable, the author manages to surprise again and again with many twists and turns. The secondary characters, especially Reed's family and Kendall's father, bring another layer to the story that makes it hard to put down.
I thoroughly enjoyed SHALLOW GRAVES and hope Christina Wolfer will return to Ripley in an upcoming book. I would certainly love to visit this small town and its intriguing characters again.
