BOOK INTERVIEW on September 2015
Interview by Laura
Teri, welcome once again to The Romance Reviews. Congratulations on your latest release, SUNSETS AND NEW BEGINNINGS!
Q: Where did you get your inspiration for the Heaven's Beach Love Story series? How are the books tied together?
I love the beach and have always wanted to write a beach love story. Nothing is more peaceful than the sounds of the ocean waves rolling in and back out again.
Q: Heaven's Beach is a peaceful seaside town. Where did you get the idea for Heaven's Beach? Is it modeled after a real seaside town?
My husband and I own a beach home on Hilton Head Island. We prefer to stay there after the crowds leave in the fall and the beaches empty. Things really quiet down. After the summer holiday, I've always believed Hilton Head had the feel of a small seaside town and that's where I came up with the Heaven's Beach setting.
Q: That's interesting! SUNSETS AND NEW BEGINNINGS is the first book in the series, and it features Mandi Waters, a woman who's had it rough. What kind of woman is Mandi? How is she able to weather storm after storm?
Mandi has been beat down by life in a lot of ways, but she always seems to bounce back. Once she realizes she really wasn't in love with her cheating fiancé, things fall into place for her and she gets her life back in order.
Q: Tell us more about Josh Foster. What kind of childhood did he have growing up? How did it affect his maturity and development?
Josh's father raised him for the most part and he managed to grow up with a good sense of right and wrong. He does have issues with trusting women after watching his mother, June, take on one lover after another during his parent's time together. June—definitely not a June Clever type—is one of those people that no matter how hard you try, you just can't seem to like her. He is ignores her pushy, and mostly unethical ways, until she tries to use them on the woman he loves.
Q: What is their first meeting like?
Here's an excerpt. Enjoy!
Mandi had made it half way through the first chapter when a soggy tennis ball bounced against her belly. A pair of wet paws thumped into her and she stared into the cutest pair of puppy-dog eyes. A whiff of doggy-breath was the only warning she got before the little guy snorted and sprayed her with spittle.
She put her book on the blanket and wiped away the slobber. "Here you go, boy. Looks like you lost your toy." He backed off of her and she wiped the wet blob of sand from her swimsuit before rubbing the dog behind the ears. "Aren't you a messy little trouble maker?"
He turned circles and yapped. "Whoa there, fella." The long-haired pooch nudged her with his cold, wet nose. "Where's your human, little guy?"
"His human is right here." Sand kicked up around her and she looked up at a laughing man. Her heart skipped a beat at the dimples edging his smile. She recognized him. He was the man in the suit she'd seen from the limo. Up close, he was every bit as good-looking as she'd thought.
"He is a she. Meet Sugar," the man continued.
"She's a sweetie."
"Sorry she bothered you. My mutt has no manners. I hope you're not allergic."
"Not that I know of." She shifted her weight on the blanket. "And Sugar's no bother."
Sugar ran her pink tongue up Mandi's arm and the man laughed. The sound was contagious and she giggled at Sugar's antics, too. "Is she always this crazy?"
"I'm afraid so."
She took a good look at the man. He was drop-dead gorgeous. His bunched-up shirt was tucked into his waistband and his sculpted chest screamed, "Touch me, for a little piece of heaven." It was a tempting dare. He looked pure beach boy; all tanned with a head of wind-tousled, brown hair Mandi would kill to run her hands through, and his muscled thighs carried his six-feet-plus frame effortlessly.
Mandi forced herself to look away. Drooling at the man would be embarrassing.
Q: What makes Josh perfect for Mandi and vice-versa?
I think they are both good people who have weathered a few storms and deserve to find true love. It's past time for them to learn to trust. He's protective, without being overbearing and she's ready to have someone in her life to lean on.
Q: What for you is a romantic moment between them?
An excerpt would show you better. Enjoy!
She rose and turned around, almost tripping over Sugar. How was it possible that she'd grown even more beautiful in just two days?
They ran into each other's arms and he twirled her in circles, kissing every inch of her skin that he could reach. "I've missed you, Mandi mine."
"It's only been two days." Her arms were holding him tight.
"Longest two days ever."
"Yeah, I know."
He put her down and smoothed her hair back. "You look beautiful."
"It's almost time for the sunset."
They sat facing each other and when she looked up at him, his heart broke. Tears trickled down her cheeks. He couldn't resist wiping them away.
"I… I'm… sorry, Josh. I'm so, so sorry."
Her shoulders shook so he gathered her in his arms. "Shh, we can fix this. As long as you love me, it's all that matters, Mandi mine." He fought tears of his own.
"I do love you, Josh and I've hated every minute we've been apart. Two minutes, two days, or two years. It doesn't matter. I'll still miss you."
Q: Which character is the hardest to write? Why?
For me, Mandi was. I wanted to show how hurt she was when she caught her fiancé with another woman. She had to be broken enough to run home to Heaven's Beach, but at the same time, I had to make her strong enough to overcome her pain and put her life back together.
Q: What kind of research did you have to do to write this book? Please share an interesting fact or unique behind the scenes experience.
There wasn't much to research for this book. But I was intrigued at how many art galleries have studios inside that can be used by the artists to work in.
Q: Please give us a sneak peek at book 2 in the series.
Book 2 is titled, True Love Never Dies, and it's Samantha's love story. She lost her husband, Nate, in a Christmas Eve car accident and is having a hard time letting him go. After three years of mourning him and with the help of her mother in law and Mandi, she's ready to move on. Sami soon realizes that true love never dies, no matter how hard she tries move on.
Q: What's up next for you?
I'm in edits for my second Resolutions book with Decadent Publishing. It's titled, The Challenge. I'm not sure of the release date yet. I have a second Christmas book, Finding True's Love, coming out on November 17th in a boxed set titled, Mischief Under the Mistletoe, with several other awesome and talented authors. I'm working on the third book in the Heaven's Beach Love Stories and it will be included in a Valentine's Day themed boxed set. The third Kennedy O'Brien book is also in the works. I should have plenty to keep me busy for a while!
Thank you, Teri, for taking out time from your busy schedule for this interview! Looking forward to reading more of your books.
Bio of author Teri Riggs:
Teri Riggs was destined to be a writer. As a small girl she didn't read bedtime stories, she made up her own. Who needed Little Red Riding Hood or The Three Little Pigs when there were so many great tales bouncing around in her head? When she grew up and became a mother to three little girls, she continued the tradition of making up bedtime stories. On the occasions she chose to tell conventional fairytales, Teri usually gave them a bit of tweaking here and there or added a new ending. Her girls loved it.
After her daughters had the nerve to actually grow up and leave home, Teri discovered she had a passion for writing and jumped right in. It came as no surprise she chose to write mysteries and happily-ever-after's since that's the genres she loves to read.
Teri lives in Marietta, Georgia with her husband, one of her daughters and two dogs that seem to think they rule the world. And some days Teri thinks maybe they do.
Teri still frequently tells herself stories as she falls asleep. The only difference now is she wakes up the next morning and turns her bedtime stories into books.
