Book 1 of Biological Response Team
Romantic Suspense/Mystery

Major Grace Samuels, a trauma surgeon deployed to Afghanistan, spends her life helping her fellow soldiers overcome disease and combat injuries. But her own wounds are harder to heal. Wracked with guilt over the death of a fellow soldier, she finds comfort in her only friend and appointed bodyguard, weapons sergeant Jacob "Sharp" Foster.

Sharp feels more for Grace than a soldier should, more than he wants to admit. When the team discovers a new, quick-to-kill strain of anthrax, he tries to focus on the mission to find its source. He knows he can help Grace defeat her demons, but first they must defeat the deadly outbreak.

Sharp is Grace's most loyal ally, but in close quarters, he starts to feel like more. She can't watch someone else she cares about die—but she might not have a choice. The closer they get to finding the source of the strain, the closer it gets to finding them.

It was refreshing to see a different kind of romantic suspense, this time involving harmful biological agents, which has the capacity to explode into devastating catastrophe for the world.

Grace Samuels is a trauma surgeon deployed to Afghanistan, where she trains fellow soldiers on disease prevention and control. She's friends with appointed bodyguard, weapons sergeant Jacob "Sharp" Foster, and she tries to keep things professional between them, although lately, she starts to feel something more for him. But there's a no fraternization rule, plus with a potential deadly outbreak, they have more problems on their hands...

There's a great mix of suspense, action and romantic development in the book, which makes for a great read. Grace is a remarkable heroine. She has her eyes always on the goal--saving mankind from the outbreak, even at cost to herself. She's a bit, um, slow on the uptake though about Sharp's feelings for her, or maybe she just didn't want to acknowledge them due to the no fraternization rule. Sharp, on the other hand, is the kind of man you'd like to have at your back, and the way he takes care of Grace is spine-tingling and heart-melting!

Once the weird deaths in the village were identified, it was non-stop action and heart-pounding suspense. Sometimes, I wish they would get a break and be able to rest; I don't know how they can continue to go on! What made this story high in tension is that not only do they have an enemy in the deadly biological strain but there's conflict too with the base's commanding officer, which ups the danger for our characters and their friends considerably. While I consider myself to have read a lot of books as to sometimes be able to guess where a story is going or the events that are going to happen, DEADLY STRAIN was a pleasant surprise in that it keeps surprising me with twists and turns to the very end!

Romantic suspense fans looking for something new should take a look at this! And that goes too for anyone who's tired of the same old, same old in her reading pile.
