Cody Johnson is a man not used to giving up—or losing a battle. But will the former Ranger find out that the battle is so much sweeter when you surrender?
All Cody Johnson wanted to do was forget everything—forget his fiancée who'd dumped him when he was wounded in Afghanistan, forget the military, forget even what it felt like to hold a woman close. The firecracker, Sonya, wasn't allowing that, was she? She was more woman—more everything—than he'd ever met. The trouble was, the harder he fell, the more he feared he'd lose.
Sonya Petrok had never considered herself to be the kind of person to sacrifice everything for love, until the day she looked down her gun at a man who'd clearly seen more pain in his life than most. But could she be the one to shelter his heart when she wasn't even certain she had one of her own?

From the first page, author Billi Jean was able to make me wish I'd started the Love's Command Series in order.
My introduction came with the fifth installment titled COME A LITTLE CLOSER, IF YOU DARE. My curiosity grew when I discovered the storyline featured some sort of drug that had been administered and changed their DNA, creating "fast and incredibly strong agents." That aspect is something that usually guarantees plenty of excitement and this story was no exception.
Sonya Petrok and Cody Johnson are brought together by a chance encounter full of possibilities. They both have baggage to deal with, but it doesn't stop the sparks from flying. While they are busy getting to know each other in the most intimate of ways, danger lurks around the corner.
The storyline switches between the fire burning romantically to the darker more sinister elements, providing an incredible level of suspense. I was kept guessing until the end, ensuring that I read the book without any breaks.
The characters are relatable with entertaining dialog. In fact, I'd have to say that their imperfections are actually perfect for the story. I'm excited about starting reading other books in this series.

DNA altered Russian spy meets handicapped former Army Ranger meets the floor, the wall, a flowerbed, a truck, a shower…
Spy Sonya Petrok has been on a DNA changing drug for years, making her an über effective operative, but also making her sexually insatiable. After seeing what the drug truly does, she's determined to stop any and all production and distribution…just as soon as she can wean herself off of it completely. Her friends send her to a hunting cabin to detox and decompress, but when her ride gets a flat, she comes face to face with one seriously sexy man.
Cody Johnson has been wallowing in self-pity for far too long. The former Army Ranger used to be a deadly force, now he's a cripple with scars covering half his face. The chemistry between the two won't be denied though, and soon they're inseparable. But there's a madman after Sonya and it's only a matter of time before he catches up with her.
COME A LITTLE CLOSER, IF YOU DARE is the 5th offering in the Love's Command Series and it starts off with a bang, literally, as Sonya has a gun pointed at complete stranger Cody one minute and her pants around her ankles and her ass in the air the next. The book continues to be one sex scene after another after another until about ¾ of the way through, when the story actually begins to take shape. I have to say that even though this story was filled with copious amounts of sex, the whole vibe was different from the other books in this series (in a good way).
First, the badass here is Sonya, but even though Cody is missing part of his leg, he's not a weak cohort by any means. They're really excellent together and I enjoyed the banter between the two of them. They were fun and playful and sweet and hot all rolled into one. Toward the end when the energy started to ramp up and the action began, I kept waiting for a bit more excitement...but it fizzled pretty damn quickly and left me wanting more of a climax (pun totally intended). Although the first 4 books in this series are of varying quality, Ms. Jean hits her stride in this and the 6th book, The Promise of Love.
Bottom Line: If you don't mind jumping into a series without starting from the beginning, I recommend starting off with COME A LITTLE CLOSER, IF YOU DARE.
