For Luisa Chavez, a twenty-three year old former beauty queen, a better life has always been just out of her reach. Sure, she's had men at her feet since she was a young teenager but she's never had the one thing she's craved – security. Having grown up in near poverty, her waitressing job in Cabo San Lucas can barely let her take care of herself, let alone her ailing parents. Every day is another unwanted advance, every day is a struggle to survive.
When Salvador Reyes, the depraved leader of a major Mexican cartel, takes an interest in her, Luisa is presented with an opportunity she can't afford to pass up. She'll become Salvador's wife and exchange her freedom and body for a life of riches – riches she can bestow upon her deserving parents. But Luisa quickly finds out that even the finest wines and jewels can't undo the ugliness in her marriage, nor the never-ending violence that threatens her every move.
Soon, Luisa is looking for an escape, a way out of the carefully controlled life she's leading. She finally gets her wish in the worst way possible.
As it is, being the wife of Salvador makes her an ideal target for rival cartels and there's one particular man who needs Luisa as part of his cartel's expansion. One particular man whose quest for power has destroyed lives, slit throats and gotten him out of an American prison. One particular man who will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants.
That man is Javier Bernal. And he wants Luisa. He wants to take her, keep her, ruin her.
Unless she ruins him first.
***WARNING*** This book deals with drug cartels and as such it contains a lot of sex and violence and some violent sex. It can get pretty ugly, pretty dark and pretty crazy. There is drug use, abuse, a bit of torture and dubious consent. The hero is not a he

4.5 "Dirty My Soul" Stars! Having been a lover of the Artists Trilogy by Karina Halle, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to read the continuation of Javier's story, in this spin-off series, particularly given that this story is presently free on Amazon! Ms. Halle's ability to test the moral compass within the dark romance genre is unparalleled and her skill is definitely put to the test in DIRTY ANGELS. Please note that this is a very dark read, and includes subjects such as rape, graphic torture, murder and therefore may not be suitable for all romance readers.
Following his disappointing unhappily ever after with Ellie, Javier is even more jaded than ever. He no longer has any desire to shroud himself in the healing powers of a good woman, instead he is more convinced than ever before that he has no soul and is perpetually incapable of love. His career choice, as the head of a Mexican cartel, and the necessarily inhuman actions he must condone and sanction to retain his coveted leadership position, no doubt led him further and further down the rabbit hole of ruin.
His latest act of cruelty in the game of power leaves a beauty queen, and the reluctant young bride of a rival drug lord, in the chess game of cartel power. All Luisa Chavez has ever cared about, even above her own health and well being, is her parents. The fact that her father suffers from Alzhiemer's disease and her mother is blind means that their livelihood rests on her shoulders. That's why even knowing it was tantamount to signing her own death sentence, she agreed to marry Salvador Reyes, the infamous and sadistic leader of Mexico's highest ranking cartel, in return for his promise to financially provide for her destitute parents.
Being with a husband who routinely beat and raped her was bad enough, but then she awakens to find herself at the hands of his brutal enemy and aspiring competitor Javier Bernal. A man who plans to use her as a bargaining chip to expand his empire and teach her husband a lesson by branding her with his own wicked sense of torture.
But Luisa's goodness begins to shine through even as she accepts her fate that she will likely die at Javier's hands. Moreover, her purity is equally becoming tinged with her own hunger for violence and the dirtying of her soul. And her bravery and spirit awakens something in Javier that he long thought dead. Perhaps he may find a queen who is willing to be as sullied as he after all. Nonetheless, a man in his position can never show weakness and caving into his desires might just cause him to lose everything he has fought so hard for. Can there possibly be any sort of a HEA for Luisa when she is just a pawn between two kings?
I have to say some of the parts of this book were definitely difficult to read. Nonetheless the story, as is usual with Ms. Halle's romantic suspense titles, had me enthralled. In fact, I'd have to say this was a 5 star read for nearly the entire book. However, there was one plot twist that tested my bounds of what I could imagine happening in reality, and therefore I felt compelled to deduct half a point. Nonetheless, that one twist aside, this was an amazing story, and it's just the beginning as Javier's and Louisa's will continue in book 3, due to come out in September. It is also advisable, though not absolutely necessary to read book 2 (Dirty Deeds), which primarily accounts Javier's sister's (Alana's) story.
