After a month as a "guest" of the Foye gang, quiet nurse Miles Bennett is itching to be able to leave their isolated ranch. But were-cougar second-in-command Hank Foye wants to take her as his mate. If she doesn't agree to accept him, he'll be cursed to spend the rest of his life on four paws. With no family waiting for her back home, Miles decides to stick around—Hank is cute, and staying in town means she'll get to stay with her friends.
Hank expected to be paired with Miles's brash friend Hannah, not meek and mundane Miles. But his goddess says this is his one and only chance for a mate, even if Miles is a liability in a world where shifters fight to lead and roam. Now he not only has to attend to Cougar affairs but play bodyguard, too.
Surprisingly, the sweet young woman brings his long-repressed passions roaring to life. She deserves to be loved unconditionally, but he sees her as the embodiment of everything he can't have. Can he get his house in order to lead a group of restless Cougars and earn his mate's trust?

Hank doesn't feel that Miles is up to the task of being a second's mate, but surprisingly she brings his long-repressed passions roaring to life in this bewitching paranormal romance.
This fast paced, smooth flowing plot bewitches readers with lots of suspense, excitement, turmoil and romance as the strong compelling characters draw you in and refuse to let go. Miles makes the decision to stay and become Hank's mate, and with the sizzling chemistry between them, you would think that everything would be grand. But the relationship is on very shaky ground as Hank refuses to see what's in front of his face which leads to some emotional turbulence that the readers can certainly relate to and to Miles making the best of the situation.
Anticipation builds throughout the story as the readers await the outcome of this mating. Plenty of excitement keeps the readers on their toes with Miles getting involved in cougar business, the goddess putting her two cents in, Hannah making waves, demons coming out of the hellmouth, and to top off all that excitement, the rival cougars still out there are surely making plans for another attack. The well written scenes and details capture the imagination and make it easy for the reader to become absorbed in the story as the intriguing events ensure that there is never a dull moment to be found.
This fascinating series has some unique elements that makes things quite interesting, especially regarding the cougar's matings. While you could probably enjoy this one without reading the first one, you would enjoy it better getting the full story of how Miles became involved in this mating. As for me, so far I have certainly enjoyed the Desert Guards and I can't wait to read Hannah's story and find out what happens between her and Sean.
