When Eva rents a cabin in the woods to reassess her life after a painful breakup, she hears rumors of disappearing hikers. Despite the stories, she resolves to stay awhile. Until she sees a crazed-looking giant wolf outside her window—with a hiker's leg in his mouth. Things get even stranger when an enormous bear fights off the wolf—and then turns into a gorgeous man.
Randulf is a shapeshifting vampire charged with tracking down the rogue werewolf and executing him before he can kill more humans. But he's wounded in the fight, and only two things can help him heal quickly enough to save both him and Eva from a second attack: sex and human blood. Eva is happy to oblige—over and over again.
Reader Advisory: This story has graphic sexual language and scenes—no closed bedroom doors (or other rooms) here!
Sometimes you want an escape from the pain. An isolated location can seem like a good choice when you are hurt. You don't expect it to become a nightmare. You don't expect a wolf to go on the attack. You don't expect a bear to come to your rescue. You certainly don't expect the bear to become a man. Eva came for peace and found something very different but even more valuable.
Eva had a bad relationship and wanted to get away from it all. She heard the stories about people disappearing in the area but never thought she was at risk. It all changed one night when she witnessed a wolf with a torn off human appendage in its mouth. The wolf went on the attack and a bear came to the rescue. When the bear then turned into a man in need of help, Eva did not hesitate to come to his rescue.
Randulf is a vampire that can shape shift. He has spent many years alone and many of his kind turn to the darkness when they don't find their mate. He hunts those down who make that choice to protect others. With his injuries, he needs Eva to heal him. Randulf wants nothing more than to claim Eva as his mate. He is a protector by nature and that makes him very attractive.
It is a short story that moves very quickly. The action starts right away and never stops. Eva handles all the revelations very calmly. She understands the danger in the situation and wants to provide aid. I would have liked to learn more about Eva's background to understand why she had little hesitation in absorbing all this information about other beings. It seems like a little shock would have been in order. I don't like fainting heroines but some sort of real reaction would have been believable.
This is an enjoyable read for those who enjoy paranormal romances. You get a mix of shape shifter and vampire in one sexy package. It is a very short read with a lot of action to keep your attention. I would have liked a little more background on Eva to understand her quick adjustment to all the changes in her life. I think the author has a good idea with this race of vampires with shape shifting abilities and hope to read some more stories from the author.
