As a sequel to Carnal Beginnings, my expectations for CARNAL INNOCENCE were set very high. I knew that author Reily Garrett would deliver a thought-provoking story featuring the BDSM lifestyle.
For all intents and purposes, CARNAL INNOCENCE seems to accomplish that goal. Take a woman with special genetic talents and place her under the protection of a resourceful Dom. So far, so good. The storyline starts getting complicated when it becomes apparent that Callie is a complete innocent shielded from the world. To automatically think that she would accept the BDSM lifestyle seemed rather incredible, especially in light of how much "safe, sane and consensual" is stressed by the Dom.
Adding genital mutilation only makes the storyline more complicated. In spite of the description, I couldn't quite get an idea what had happened aside from the piercing. Although I understand why the BDSM lifestyle might be attractive to someone who has undergone such a traumatic experience, the puzzle pieces just simply didn't fit.
While there is plenty of cloak and dagger suspense with Nate providing protection for Callie, too many areas remained undeveloped. I think the general premise of the storyline shows great promise, but this installment didn't meet my expectations.
