SLEEPLESS IN MANHATTAN is a sweet and charming read that'll give you a new perspective on why that dude in high school said no all those years ago.
Paige Walker, events planner extraordinaire, is psyched! Primed to receive a killer promotion, she is instead unceremoniously fired from her dream job. She hasn't been this disappointed since her HS crush Jake Romano declined her advances and she felt like he ripped the rug out from under her. Now the top dog at a digital marketing firm in Manhattan, Jake is coveted by women all over the city, but he never stops thinking of the one whose heart he broke all those years ago. He's made annoying his BFF's little sister Paige into an art form, but when he finds out she lost her job, he knows he's got to do something to help...just as soon as she asks for it.
It takes Paige a lot to finally ask Jake for his help, but he doesn't hesitate both to offer her her first big job, but also a work space in his building. And now that she's around constantly, it's all Jake can do to keep his hands off of her. Pretty soon he stops trying, and the two of them fall into bed. But Jake's past won't allow him to trust the feelings he's having for Paige. Will he embrace his newfound feelings for Paige or will he allow the woman he's always wanted to slip through his fingers yet again?
SLEEPLESS IN MANHATTAN is the first offering in the forthcoming From Manhattan With Love series from the talented Ms. Morgan, and is a spinoff of her popular Puffin Island series. Paige was an interesting character, totally and utterly in love with Jake (but thisclose to the point of slightly creepy obsession). Jake wanted Paige fiercely too, but wouldn't allow himself to entertain THOSE types of thoughts. They dance around their feelings for a good portion of the book, and the chemistry jumps off the pages. Their relationship went from 0 to 60 once he admitted his feelings, and Paige couldn't be happier. The sex was hot...not wild chandelier swinging hot, but sexy and just a wee bit on the erotic side.
I would caution the author to make some major editing repairs as well as to keep her writing consistently American, as she went back and forth between NYC and London-speak quite frequently, which was slightly distracting. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of originality in SLEEPLESS IN MANHATTAN. It almost read like a mishmash of many contemporary romance stories I've read, and I had hoped for something that stood out in this overcrowded market. Nonetheless, it was a decent read that fans of hers will no doubt enjoy.
Bottom Line: Loyal fans of Ms. Morgan will love this spinoff, and I personally wouldn't mind reading the follow ups to this book, however you may be disappointed in the lack of originality.
