Best-selling author Karlyn Campbell is ready for a new start after her recent divorce from a temperamental artist. When she receives word that her father had a stroke, she heads for Walton Springs with mixed feelings. Broderick Campbell wrote Pulitzer Prize-winning literary novels and denounced his daughter's work as pedestrian and commercial, causing a rift that finally heals on his deathbed. Karlyn chooses to stay in the small Georgia town to write her popular Matt Collins series and decides to try her hand at true crime when Atlanta's Rainbow Killer, Roy G. Biv, captures her interest.

Detective Logan Warner's marriage didn't survive after he lost his twins to a crazed killer who was never caught. He returns to his hometown's police force and runs for police chief, happy he's escaped big city crime and corruption. Emotionally dead, his interest in life is renewed when he falls in love with Karlyn and begins to build a new life with her.

But the Rainbow Killer moves beyond Atlanta, leaving a trail of dead bodies painted in bright hues in several towns north of the city. Leaving no trace evidence or DNA and choosing random victims with no apparent rhyme or reason, Roy proves unstoppable. Then he arrives in Walton Springs, threatening the peaceful town with his murder spree. With a serial killer in their back yard, Logan and Karlyn unite with the FBI to find the killer—before he finds them.

ILLUSIONS OF DEATH has everything you can want in a romantic suspense, a heartfelt, emotional romance intertwined with an intense search for an evolved serial killer. This is a thriller with a lot of twists and a surprise ending that had me guessing.

Karlyn Campbell is the bestselling author of the action-packed Matt Collins thriller series. She comes to Walton Springs after her famous father's stroke to stay with her mother and regroup after her divorce. Logan Warner is a cop on his hometown police force of Walton Springs after leaving the Atlanta PD four years ago when his twins were abducted and killed by a serial killer and his marriage ended in divorce. When these two meet, Logan starts to want more than just to exist and Karlyn is starting to find contentment, but the Rainbow Killer has plans of his own.

The love story between Karlyn and Logan feels so real and is integrated well throughout the story. They both have past issues that they needed to face and resolve, which they do in a mature and honest way. The small town of Walton Springs is filled with secondary characters that keep you entertained or wondering about their motives. All of the interactions between Karlyn, Logan and the people of The Springs were very well written and made me want to be a member of the town, too. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat and afraid to put the book down because I didn't want the killer to strike again.

Lauren Linwood has written a romantic suspense that has a realistic setting and dialogue. A love story that satisfies and a suspense plot that keeps you reading. Loved it!
