It's senior year and Cora Stephens has it planned out to the last detail. She never imagined her happily ever after might take a much different path.
Emily Paige Skeen tells Cora's story in MAGNOLIA LAKE. Full of teen angst, readers get a trip back to high school complete with lunch table drama and cheer practice.
With the outward appearance of a "sweet" storyline, the author incorporates a dramatic twist that is anything but sweet. While it changed the direction of the story, there were some additional opportunities for development left untouched.
This was a story that garnered a sense of nostalgia for those carefree teen years when the biggest question centered around a date for Prom. The one aspect that kept interrupting the flow was the heavy use of contractions to depict the dialect such as jumpin' and talkin'. I understand why the writer would do this, but it seemed distracting.
Overall, this story would definitely be suited for a much younger audience who might be able to identify more with the characters.
