What could possibly go wrong when a dominant hacker and a demure woman on the run spend all their time together learning to trust one another?
Ex-con Stone Sutter has been tasked by the FBI to bring in Lily Taylor, aka Sweet Pea, so she can testify against the man who raped and murdered her best friend and her family. But Lily wants nothing to do with another criminal, even if this one does make her squirm with just a glance. When Lily is targeted once again, she and Stone go on the run, and the time alone together makes their chemistry undeniable. Stone fell for Lily the moment he met her, and now he needs her to agree to testify in order to stay out of prison. But how does he tell her that, while his love for her is as real as it gets, the beginning circumstances of their relationship were contrived? As vulnerable as Lily is, will she ever forgive Stone for his betrayal?
FALLING IN DEEPER is book 11 in the Wicked Lovers series, and though I haven't read all of the books I didn't feel too lost with Stone and Lily's story. I had a tough time getting into this book for some reason. While technically quite well written, I just couldn't connect with the characters, Lily especially. I empathized with her, felt terrible about the hand she was dealt, but she was just so irritating with her distrust and suspicions and naiveté. It was very difficult to find common ground with her, though I totally wouldn't mind being put in her stilettos when Stone was around. What a hunka hunka hackin' man, my friends!
Stone was definitely the saving grace of FALLING IN DEEPER, as he was a pretty unique and complex character. He has no experience as an operative, has spent time in prison for theft and money laundering, yet he puts himself out there and on the line to try and save the woman he's started falling for. And speaking of lurveeee, it's always tough to make insta-love feel legit, and I didn't feel it in this read. I didn't think they had great chemistry…it was all just OK for me.
What was good was the suspense portion of the story. I was kept on edge waiting for the shoe to drop and for someone to come after Lily. Even though this one wasn't a big winner for me, I would still read other books in the Wicked Lovers series.
Bottom Line: FALLING IN DEEPER didn't do much for me personally, but I'm sure devoted fans of the Wicked Lovers series will go nuts over this one. If I could give this one a 3.5, I would.
