As vampire Evande Austin tries to adjust to her new found abilities, she can't fight her new reality. She never intended to fall in love with two men. But she also never intended to take Fae blood to keep her alive either.

Trouble lurks in the shadows and Evande fears she will not be able to control the raging blood fever that burns through her because of Quinn. Thanks to Logan, the man who gives her anchor, Evande is able to maintain a thread of sanity in the blinding chaos.

When the Elders strike out and her future tumbles around her feet, Evande realizes the two men give her a bond she is unable to survive without. They need her just as much as she needs them. Giving into them both could just be the one thing that saves everyone.

But one thing remains clear—nothing comes without a cost.

FORGED IN FIRE is the compelling third book in Sara Brookes' Re-Birth series. Shorter than the others, the book is a quick read and felt a bit anti-climactic. Though the characters are well-developed and evolved, primarily from information from the previous book, it's the fast-paced plot that consumes readers.

As vampire Evande Austin, an ex-Elder vampire, is adjusting to her newfound abilities while she finds herself falling in love with two men – Quinn and Logan. Quinn, the former king of the Fae, is a sexy protective alpha male who has been in love with Evande forever. Logan, a new vampire Evande has 'rebirthed', is a watered-down alpha vampire. Both men are accepting of their love triangle even though Evande isn't.

Nothing goes as planned for Evande because she also never intended to drink Quinn's fae blood to keep her alive. Now she has to bond with her men, survive her blood lust and overcome the trouble the Elders throw at her which is partly because of Quinn's fae blood. Much of the book is taken with her fighting how much she needs Quinn and Logan which frustrates me in a heroine. Evande is a strong heroine but lacks that compassion that allows me to connect with her.

FORGED IN FIRE absolutely MUST be read only after you've read the first two books if you want to be able to follow the plot. The action scenes are plentiful while the sex scenes are hot. The battle with the Elders is quite suspenseful – though that suspense built for me throughout the entire series. So please read the first two books in the series first and then grab this one up. It's a good read.

Interview by Laura

Hi Sara, congratulations on the Top Picks (5 stars) for both Flash of Dark and Blood Fever, the first two books in the Rebirth series!

Q: Now, our interest is piqued and we're excited to learn more! I certainly am! So, what is your Rebirth series all about? What is the common thing that binds all the books in this series?

Basically it all boils down to the age-old struggle of good vs evil. But I take it one step further. After all, who decides good people are good and bad people are bad? The line is easy to blur and my characters sometimes have to step over lines they wouldn't ordinarily. It's necessary to sometimes get things done that are in the best interest of everyone. That's evident in all three books. There's a rampaging group of vampires trying to destroy everything and my characters have to ask themselves how far are they willing to go in order to get things done—regardless of the consequences.

Q: Fascinating. Nothing is ever black and white, as we know. What is your inspiration for this series?

I wanted to write something different. See, I'm a voracious reader. I mean, I used to gorge myself on books because I love reading that much. Reading that many books, I found myself overdosing on the male lead was always the one that brought the complication to the budding relationship. He was vamp, she was human. He was wolf, she was human. And so on. There's nothing wrong with this at all, I thoroughly enjoy it. But I kept asking myself, why can't the female be the one with the complication? Why can't she be the vampire with all the problems? So, my female leads in the books came about. Both Ana, from Flash of Dark, and Evande, from Blood Fever and Forged in Fire, have some big time complications they bring to the table and the same will be true in future books of the series with different female leads.

Q: In FORGED IN FIRE, our vampire heroine, Evande Austin, has discovered new abilities. Please tell us more about her. What qualities does she possess that would enable her to adjust to her new reality?

Evande is probably one of the most complex and interesting characters I've created. She so very much wants to do the right thing and because of that desire, she's stepped away from those who don't. But through a series of events, she finds herself thrust back into that world she fought so hard to get away from. She has no choice but to adapt to everything that's changing around her, even as she changes. Luckily, she has two very strong and capable men who are right at her side to help her deal with everything.

Q: Evande has two men in her life, Quinn and Logan. Lucky girl! Who is Quinn and how does he fit into Evande's life? What makes him a swoon worthy hero?

Quinn was once the High King of the Tuatha De Dannan—the Fae. But he left that world and came through the Veil to live on Earth, which makes him immortal, but still human. He had never stopped loving Evande despite the fact they had a difference of opinion about something years ago that caused Evande to leave.

With his former position as High King, he knows how to take charge, to do things that need to get done even if no one else agrees. He's completely willing to go against the grain and not give it a second thought. While he's maddeningly frustrating at times, he is also extremely loyal and will fight for what he believes in with everything he has. While that makes him a worthy adversary, he is also extremely dangerous. And that's without any kind of supernatural power as his abilities were stripped away when he came through the Veil. No one knows what Quinn is capable of, so I know I wouldn't want to get on his bad side.

Q: I'm all about being on Quinn's good side! Now, please tell us about Logan. What makes him more than a match for Quinn in terms of hero-worthiness?

Just as Logan is the opposite of Quinn, he's very much like Quinn. It's what makes both men such a balance for Evande. Don't get me wrong, he isn't without fault and just like Quinn, he's done some really stupid things. But he's taken some real blows in this new life of his with great stride. He isn't willing to give up easily and he too fights for what he believes in. He makes that very clear to Evande right from the beginning even when he's trying to deal with problems of his own. Once she tells him what she's standing for and why, Logan is right there by her side ready to fight the fight with her. Hard not to admire that kind of willingness and strength.

Q: Both Quinn and Logan just make me want to swoon. What makes Quinn perfect for Evande? Or Logan for Evande?

They're each perfect in their own way so they serve as a perfect foundation for Evande. At the end of Blood Fever, the book prior to FORGED IN FIRE, Quinn take a drastic step that alters everything—something he feels levels the playing field for this war Evande is trying to fight. But at the same time, it's a step that changes the world the three know.

In FORGED IN FIRE, even though he hasn't been in this fight long, Logan knows that Quinn is right—what happened was the only thing that could have and he works to make Evande understand that. There are things Logan can give her that Quinn can't. By the same token, Quinn can give her what Logan can't. But it's not all wine and roses, that's for certain.

Q: What do the men see in Evande that make them willing to share her?

It wasn't an easy acceptance from all parties and for a long time, Evande has great misgivings about it. She wonders what she's done in order to earn their love. But they both know that she has to be the one to come to them. They can push her, but only so much. She has to be the once to accept it herself. When she finally does, the sparks certainly fly. However, even then there are still repercussions for that decision. I don't think much of anything happens in this series without there being some kind of fallout—be it good or bad.

Q: What is your favourite scene in the book? Why?

There's a moment in FORGED IN FIRE where Evande realizes she can fight her attraction and love for both men all she wants, but it's going to happen whether or not she likes it. I really love this sequence because it's a great display of the differences the men give her, but at the same time, how similar their love is for her. Take a look:

"She is one extraordinary woman."

"And she's ours," Logan chimed in as his hand skimmed over my hair.

"I'm still here you know," I said dryly without the slightest bit of heat as my head shook in disbelief. I tugged on my lip and realized if there was ever a time to own up to my feelings, the opportunity couldn't have been more perfect. "But I do agree, I am yours. I belong to both of you. I just...don't want anyone to feel left out. That wouldn't be fair."

Quinn stopped me. "I think we should worry about that."

They both pressed from either side, boxing me in. Their scents mixed, flooded me, inundating me with the intensity. Clarity needed to be the voice of reason right now and I seemed to be the only one who possessed it. "No, we all should."

"I think we can figure it out and you should just let us take care of things," Logan said as he shifted to push up behind me, his chilled skin pressing to me even as Quinn's heat enveloped me.

Trapped between them, caught between their bodies, I was unable to move. Realizing resisting was futile, I let my head fall forward so my forehead rested against Quinn's collarbone. My hair was swept to the side and a pair of lips lightly touched against the back of my neck.

"I think the three of us are tied together by something none of us can control."

"Then it would be stupid to try to control it or worse yet, ignore it completely."

Energy pulsed around us as the two men spoke and I pushed my forehead away from Quinn's chest to stare up at him. I cradled his jaw in my cupped palm and genuine love swam in his eyes.

"You are the blood that burns through my veins. And you," I turned to touch Logan lightly on the center of his chest as my gaze found his. "You are the heart that anchors and binds me. Together, you both give me life. I can't--"

"You don't have to," Quinn interrupted.

A horn honked on the tarmac. "Are you guys coming?"

"Regretfully, no," Logan answered just loud enough so Quinn and I heard and we all chuckled at the joke. With the tension that filled the space around us, it was good to hear the laughter. There hadn't been enough of it in our lives lately.

"We should get going."

"This isn't over," they said at nearly the same time.

I gave both men encouraging smiles. "I'm counting on it."

Q: Please share with us a fun fact or unique behind the scenes experience in the course of writing this story.

Like most books, FORGED IN FIRE went through several different iterations as the story took shape. In fact, I had to put it aside for a bit and write Flash of Dark, which ended up being the first book in the series. Then I moved on to write Blood Fever and then I could work on Forged in Fire again. Events in the previous two books changed the shape of Forged in Fire and now readers get the story—finally!

But one scene, after all those changes, revisions and edits, remained. It's a simple scene where there aren't any explosions, fire, death, car crashes, gun fights, blood, etc—it's two people, in a quiet alcove, healing their painful memories. I love that this scene has been in this book from the very beginning. It's so simple but extremely powerful and emotional.

Q: What's up next in the series? Please give us a sneak peek.

I plan to write two more books in the series to finish it out and next up will be from Callista, Evande's best friend. Her world has been irrevocably changed and she's having trouble coping with those changes. In the midst of dealing with losing everything she's known, the group needs to rescue one of their own. But you know it's not going to be that easy, right? Because it never, ever is. At least where my characters are concerned.

Q: What's up for you in the coming months?

A lot! Urban fantasy isn't the only genre I write since there are plenty of stories rattling around in my head. So, I have a series of futuristic BDSM erotica shorts coming out with Decadent Publishing over the next few months. The first of that series, IMPULSE CONTROL, comes out on July 22nd. And I have a m/m/f contemporary BDSM erotic romance titled RAGGED EDGE coming out from Ellora's Cave in the next month or so. Which means over the next several months, I'll have about four or five releases. While I'm waiting for those, I'm hard at work on a few other projects I have going, one of which is Callista's book for the Rebirth series.

You are certainly one busy woman, Sara, and thanks for your time in sharing your books with us!

Despite all this, she is a romantic at heart and is always a sucker for an excellent love story. Born and bred in Virginia, Sara still lives there with her husband and daughter.
