I'm sure you're asking yourself, how could something that starts in tragedy potentially end with a happily ever after, especially given the title? How could a man who has gone through such tragedy and vowed such vengeance, turn his life around? How could a woman who suffered such humiliating betrayals and lies ever learn to trust again? Thrown together in marriage for business purposes, Merrick and Lynda find themselves in what could be an untenable position but what results is an enjoyable story of coming to terms with your past while looking forward to your future.
This was an interesting read for me, partly because the situation seemed believable on many levels and I felt like a fly on the wall watching everything transpire. The juxtaposition between Merrick's very lavish lifestyle and Lynda's life that is much more modest made for an interesting dichotomy and while it could have easily been overdone, Ms. Tate does an amazing job of showing both sides without making it seem contrived.
This is not an insta-love story. While yes, the couple is indeed attracted to each other, the progression of their attraction and how she wrote it had me tapping the pages. It's hard for me to explain what I liked so much about this story without giving away spoilers or coming across as too analytical. For starters, I really liked that there were misconceptions about each other that was premised on false information. It was made better by the way the author handled those reveals and had the characters work through those shifts in perspectives.
The ways the couple came together sexually was explosive in all the right ways and Ms. Tate kept building on those scenes, each one that much more interesting and well, to be honest, yummy.
UNYIELDING is book 1 in the Tortured Love series by Ravenna Tate and it's exactly that. If there aren't any warnings, there's a bit of kink involved but it isn't over the top or out of place to the story.
