Mel and Nate race to find a killer in LURE OF OBSESSION.
When Melanie (Mel) Jacoby was eighteen, the muse of tragic poetry awoke within her. She began dreaming of a broken down theatre and she moved to Crystal City when she realized the theatre was real. In the city, Mel met the other eight muses and they started a consortium to rebuild the theatre and start a new Theater of the Muses. In Crystal City Mel finds a job as an English teacher and a sense of purpose inspiring the next generation. Then she returns home to find her roommate Nia, a fellow Muse, dead and her world starts to fall apart.
Detective Nate Malone is assigned to investigate Nia's death. He is all set to rule it a tragic accident until his birthmark starts throbbing and he has a vision of someone in a Chronos mask pushing Nia down the stairs. It turns out that each Muse is assigned a Guardian and Mel has just found hers. It comes not a minute too soon as the masked man appears to view Mel as his next target. Can Nate help the Muses discover who is targeting them and stop the threat in time or will Mel become the next victim?
Lisa Kessler delivers a fast-paced thrill ride. Not only are her main characters fully developed but the supporting cast, including Nate's partner John and the other Muses such as Callie, all have individualized role to play. The addition of the little girl Maggie to the novel fleshes out Nate's backstory and integrates well into the central plot. It is nice to read a novel where everything moves the plot forward without feeling contrived. Ms. Kessler has a gift for prose fiction and great things can be expected from the rest of her series. Anyone interested in Greek myth, fantasy or simply looking for a good read should grab this novel.
