He can only be with her in her dreams until destiny unites them. She is alone since her mother's death and her dreams of a snow leopard bring her comfort. When she looks for a job, it brings her to an area that feels right. It also brings her to her mate. He will have to work hard to convince her that love is worth the risk. Her new life will bring her the chance for great love and a real family if she can survive the danger.

Dominic is a snow leopard shifter. He is like the other male members of his family in that they start dreaming of their mate at some point after they reach adulthood. The dreams give them just a glimpse of their mate and the hope is that the information will lead them to one another. Some have to wait a long time to find their mate outside of the dreams. When he starts dreaming of his mate, he is deliriously happy but is worn down after years of not meeting her. He is only able to represent himself as a snow leopard to his mate in their shared dreams to keep her feeling safe. He works hard with his father and others in the community for the fire department and focuses on that while he waits to pursue his mate. He is shocked when he finds her at an accident scene and thrilled when she accepts the job that has them working together.

Adele is a young woman on her own. Her mother raised her after she was kicked out of her home and country for getting pregnant without being married. When her mother dies, she is determined to focus on work and help others as a paramedic. Love is too big a risk considering how much it took from her mom so she has avoided any romantic relationships. When she is on the hunt for a job, she finds the perfect community. They make her so welcome, especially Dominic. He makes it clear he wants a romantic relationship and she finds it hard to resist his kindness and the attraction she feels for the first time. He is the kind of man that may be worth the risk. When they encounter a young girl who has been abused while out on a date, the desire to protect her from harm brings them closer together. The young girl also brings danger and this time more than her heart is at risk.

The author creates an interesting history for the snow leopards. They originate as protectors in Tibet. The shifters still incorporate that protective spirit in relation to the community and the people they love. Dominic and his friends and family really embrace Adele. They want to make her feel safe and protected. When they find the young girl in need of medical care, they all volunteer to keep her safe. All of them risk their lives to save others. Unlike most other shifter romances where you usually only get the female and male characters as narrators, this story allows multiple members of his family to serve as the narrator. I found that it made me feel closer to the characters and I was impressed by the author's ability to weave thru the different narrators without any confusion for the reader.

This is really a story within a story. You have a more traditional paranormal romance as the opening but it transitions into more of a suspenseful thriller. The author has these two stories start out separately and then weaves them together. I was expecting more of a typical paranormal romance and was quite surprised when the story moved to a very abusive situation involving a man that kidnaps women and keeps them as his slave until they die from the abuse. It is a very harrowing part of the story and the author does not shy away from including very descriptive details of the abuse. I think that it is important that readers are made aware of the abusive situation as some are not comfortable with that kind of story, especially when children are also involved. The author does not sensationalize the details but is very realistic and even has the killer narrate at times and immerse you in his rationale.

At its heart, GUARDIAN'S HEART is a story of how love can heal. If you can deal with the very realistic abuse depicted, you will find yourself rewarded with a story that provides hope for the future.
