Anna Carrington is no longer a child, but a marriageable young woman who has loved the Duke of Fairmount for years. She has kept her love for him well hidden, sure that even if, by some miracle, he did return her feelings, his dedication to propriety would never allow him to marry his ward.

Jared St. James is known for his strict adherence to the rules of society and respectability, even though he finds himself lusting after Anna. Having struggled against his desire to his young ward, he decides the only way to right the situation is to marry her off, but will she accept the man he has chosen for her or stake claim to her innocence?

Don't be fooled by the page length—this story packs quite a bit of passion and a remarkable amount of heart. Though the story itself is only one scene, a few short hours in the lives of these two characters, I was swept away.

For the seven years she has been under his care, Anna has been in love with Jared St. James. Now that she has come of age, she knows she will soon be expected to marry, but the only man she has ever wanted is the one man she knows she cannot have—because Jared is her guardian and far too concerned with the tenets of society to entertain the idea of marrying his ward. She is grateful, however, that he has not yet forced her to come out into society or to choose a husband, permitting her instead to live in the country where she can read, paint and dream to her heart's content. And her dreams are always of Jared.

Until one night when she wakes to find him standing in her doorway, her every fantasy come to life. Jared has come home unexpectedly and specifically to see Anna. He has decided it is high time for her to marry and has also already decided that there is only one man who should ever be allowed to introduce Anna to all the pleasures of wedded bliss.

There is no denying that the physical passion of Anna's first night with Jared is at the forefront of this story, and my, my, what passion! That having been said, it's very obvious that a great deal of thought went into creating each of their characters.

With a few broad strokes, Anna and Jared come to life. She is creative and passionate and has been essentially alone for most of her life, except for her guardian, who has always shown her real kindness. Jared was once a carefree, laughing young man before he inherited his title and the weight of nobility tumbled onto his shoulders. His chance for freedom lies in Anna's arms, if he only has the courage to take it. Together, they are beautifully matched, and in this scene, their desire is absolutely incendiary.

The familiarity between these two characters prior to the events of this book added an interesting dimension to their first night together. Discovering each other's desires and learning to express their own was a little awkward at times, but it made the scene feel more real and endearing. I wouldn't be at all sad to see this scene expanded a little, to give us more of Anna and Jared's relationship. Their characters were so strong that I was definitely wishing for more. Liz Cole is now on my Writers to Watch List—the steamy writing style, tension and attention to detail throughout this debut work makes me quite eager to read much more!
