Book 1 of Players to Men
Contemporary Romance, New Adult

When the fairy tale life you believed in falls apart, there is nothing else left…

Or so I thought, until Trouble, wrapped in one hunky body and a sinful smile promising untold pleasure of the carnal kind, lands on my doorstep. Despite what my body demands or the fact that I'm irresistibly drawn to him, I'd been burned too deeply to dare try again. Besides, Max Meade-Sinclair is my younger sister's best friend—and totally off-limits.

Ila Logan's coolly dismissive manner captures and challenges me from the moment our paths cross. What I want, I usually get. A little thing like age isn't going to stop me. Neither are the men who disappear into her secluded room. However, she proves a difficult opponent who leaves me falling for her a little more at each encounter.

This tempestuous woman is mine, but to win her, I must dig deeper, and show her that beneath my brawling, player facade exists a man who would go to the ends of the earth to make her happy.

But surviving my own dark past may just destroy the fragile bond growing between us…

*Breathless is a steamy, full length standalone novel.*

Max's life is in shambles. After the tragic death of his mother, he went off the rails in every facet of his life. His relationship with his father is nonexistent. The music education he once had is ruined. After a sabbatical in Peru, Max needs a fresh start. But lingering pain from a car accident and being the heir to his father's fortune makes this all the more difficult.

Ila hasn't fared much better as of late. Her cheating scum ex-fiance still hounds her and the floozy he cheated with loves flaunting her catch. Ila's job comes with a pain-in-the-ass boss. Her love of painting is the only passion she has left and even that has become a hassle as she works on the side to help pay off her family's debt.

When Max spots a woman in a laundromat, he is captivated by her. Little does he know, but a friend's apartment that he is about to crash in will come with a nice perk: Ila. Determined to hang on to the new light in his life, Max sets on a path to woo the woman of his dreams.

All is not smooth sailing, though. Ila has been burned once by a man and she doesn't want any part of what Max is offering. But no matter how many excuses she makes for avoiding him, Ila can't help but feel as though a romp with Max might be the cure she needs to get over her ex and move on with her life. She just promises that her heart is off limits...

Overall, I liked this book. But that didn't come as easily as I hoped it would. Both of our main characters had serious communication problems. I understand that a lot of people run from their issues and avoid confrontation at all costs. These two didn't ignore conflict in general, only with each other. Meaning, when something happened, instead of talking about it, one would inevitably flee the scene and it became repetitive. After a few times, you'd think that these two would grow up enough to learn their lesson. Not so...

However, despite the constant disappearing acts, there is a lot to like about this book. The main characters are flawed and layered with past hurts and believable insecurities. There was definite chemistry between the couple and the love scenes sizzled. The plot was busy so there was plenty of development there, too.

In closing...
A solid good read and nice start to the series. I look forward to the next book. Three stars!

As a young teenager how many women haven't dreamt of finding the man of her dreams, marrying him, and having a HEA relationship.

However, having an HEA is not what Ila Logan had in her life. She'd been deeply hurt in more ways than one; a hurt which caused her to retreat into herself and into a cloistered-like life of a nun, putting off any sort of relationship with the opposite sex for fear of it happening again.

There could be only one way for her to get out of the doldrums of her sexual lifestyle, and would be for some guy to literally fall out of the sky and into her lap. Unfortunately, the likelihood of this ever happening is between slim and nonexistent; yet this is what precisely what Ila got.

With her still subconsciously desiring to fulfill the needs of the woman she is, she can't go with Max Meade-Sinclair, the great looking hunk who showed up at her door, a guy whose presence foretold of possible carnal pleasures awaiting any woman who interacts with him. Yet, there's a fly in the ointment for Ila regarding Max, he's her younger sister's best friend, and a bit too young, despite his mature demeanor.

As I read this story and being a child of the 1950's, as well as lover of Frank Sinatra, how can I not see how his song, "Love is Lovelier the Second Time Around," fits Ila's situation to a tee:

"Love is lovelier the second time around
Just as wonderful with both feet on the ground
It's that second time you hear your love song sung
Makes you think perhaps that love, like youth, is wasted on the young
Love's more comfortable the second time you fall
Like a friendly home the second time you call
Who can say what brought us to this miracle we've found?
There are those who'll bet love comes but once, and yet
I'm oh, so glad we met the second time around
Who can say what brought us to this miracle we've found?
There are those who'll bet love comes but once, and yet
I'm oh, so glad we met the second time around"

I love the real life interactions these two individuals had as their relationship progressed. Will their relationship end in a HEA we love to read in a romance novel, especially when at least for one side it's a second chance romance? I'm not going to say as it will ruin your experience reading has to offer here, and why I've given this book 5 STARS.
