Historical Romance

A maiden for the mercenary.

Mercenary knight Rhain is living on borrowed time. With a vengeful warlord pursuing him, he has accepted his fate—though first he must get his men to safety.

When he rescues mysterious and deeply scarred Helissent from her attackers, Rhain soon wishes he wasn't marked for death. He can never be the man she deserves—his scandalous lineage alone dictates that—but Rhain can't resist the temptation to show this innocent maiden how beautiful she truly is…

What happens when a man who once had a golden life suddenly falls from grace through no fault of his other than his parentage? To go from privilege to scorn? Tainted with what they called "Devil's blood." To make one really bad (okay two) decision that turns him from a "carefree man" with a "purposeful life" to one of forfeit and a bounty on his head.

What happens when this man meets a woman whose one side is hopelessly disfigured with scars and the other exquisitely perfect?

Who is the more tragic of the two? The one with the outward scars or the one heavily scarred on the inside.

Rhain and Helissent's story was amazing and lovely and I will confess to a few tears. The absolute reverent way that Rhain shows her his devotion and the beauty in her scars will melt your heart. And I don't want to reveal spoilers but that scene in the cellar together is pure visual poetry. And it only gets better.

Likes: I'm a sucker for well-crafted period pieces. While we don't get too much of the mercenaries, what we do get will have you smiling as Helissent quickly wraps them around her little finger. All of the characters are well-crafted and come together in a seamless telling of love and redemption.

THE KNIGHT'S SCARRED MAIDEN by Nicole Locke is part of the Harlequin Historical miniseries in the Lovers and Legends series.
