BOOK INTERVIEW on May 2018
Hi Lisa Renee, thanks for your time! Your latest release, MURDER NOTES, is the first book in the Lilah Love series.
What do you enjoy most about writing this book?
Creating Lilah's character paired with the mystery. I love a mystery but when combined with Lilah's personality I love it even more. Lilah is quick-witted, and says the things most of us think, but won't say. She doesn't care. She just says them. It's freedom. I can be free while writing her and I hope the readers feel this as well!
Tell us more about Lilah. What makes her a heroine we would root for?
Lilah is flawed in many mays, and I think, when a character is too perfect, they are harder to find relatable. She deals with this by being quite adversarial, but I think that's what will hopefully draw readers to her. She fights back. She isn't going to be defeated. And as I mentioned, she is that character that has all the comebacks you wish YOU could say in the heat of the moment. She's also fiercely protective of the people close to her, which I think everyone can relate to, but with all of that also comes a stubborn streak a mile wide. She won't let her vulnerabilities get the best of her, but her armor does crack every once and a while, and though I do love tough Lilah, the moments when she lets herself be more on the vulnerable side were both extremely challenging and exciting to write.
Please share a fun and intriguing fact or experience during the research of writing this book.
SO. MUCH. RESEARCH. Oh my goodness, this may have been the book I've done the most research for ever. In fact, I'm positive it is. The intricacies of Lilah's job along with jurisdictional issues, etc. took up quite a bit time while I was writing. And of course, I had to choose a setting, where the laws and procedures are much more complicated. I would spend hours looking for a single answer because I wanted everything to be as accurate as humanly possible. I am very fortunate that my husband's cousin is a detective in Houston, who is willing to help when I need help. I'm in fact, planning to chat with him in the next week or so, about Lilah #3.
What is a typical writing day like?
Morning to night. Of course, there are distractions, as I do have other responsibilities, but what my writing days are SUPPOSED to look like are wake up, get coffee, write my heart out all day (with several more coffee breaks during the day), workout for a bit in the evening, and then write more until I can't keep my eyes open any longer. If I could figure out how to write while I sleep, that would be immensely helpful lol. My computer does make it to the ledge of the bathtub!
Oh, be careful it doesn't fall in! What's up next for you?
Murder Girl is out July 11th. There are other things, yes, but Lilah is my favorite character ever, and I am excited to let readers known how quickly they can get book #2! I even have a website and facebook page just for Lilah www.lilahlove.com
connects to both.
