It isn't a secret that I love a good period piece. Add in a bit of a mystery and some suspense, and I'm sold. In R.C. Matthews' THE SECRETS OF CHATEAU SWANSEA, we get all that and so much more. I was absolutely swept up into the story, so much so that it was dark and I had a hungry dog staring plaintively at me, awaiting his very late dinner, before I forcibly took a break and then quickly picked it up again.

Likes/Loves: I am in awe of the use of language in this story. It can be hard enough to turn a good phrase but to manage it consistently? Wow. As an example, and this is early on: "Maribeth rubbed the pad of her thumb against the tips of her fingers, seeking the gritty remnants of her youth, but they were washed away long ago." Maribeth and Arthur are a wonderful team. Maribeth's wit had me laughing and the characters' chemistry together made this story a joy to read. The mystery behind the murders, the various secondary characters, the very scenic locale, and a rich and engaging plot all came together in an amazing story. So much so that I can't think of a single dislike.

THE SECRETS OF CHATEAU SWANSEA is a wonderful story that will sweep you up into the telling as you wonder whether Arthur and Maribeth will surrender their hearts to one another before the murderer strikes again. Fear not, this is a romance and we will not be denied our happily ever after nor they theirs.
