SUMMARY
The Gathering is called. The spell is cast. There is no escaping the Midnight Matings.
Colton isn't happy with the elders' trickery, but he's not opposed to choosing a mate. Sly may not be exactly what he had in mind, but if he can get past his instinct to eat the little ferret, they might just be able to make it work.

Sly has wanted a mate for as long as he can remember. When he crawls up Colton's leg while trying to escape his ex-lover, he quickly realizes that the big hippogriff shifter is just what he's been looking for.
Sly possesses something very special, though—something anyone would kill to have. Unfortunately, it's also his only hope of achieving immortality if he wishes to stay with Colton forever. But how long can he keep his treasure hidden from those who seek to take it as their own?

The edict set down by the paranormal worlds' Elders is still wreaking havoc and creating interesting mate pairings. Sly is a ferret with a pretty shiny things fixation, and Colton is a hippogriff…yes, you Harry Potter fans, a hippogriff and a ferret. Now if Colton can just keep from eating his little mate, and I am not talking about the good way, and keep him safe from his ex, they might just have a shot at happily ever after.

Sly has been hiding out in the Elder's castle for about two weeks when the Gathering occurs. When he spots his ex in the hallway, he starts to head in the opposite direction until something sparkly that belongs to him damn it, catches his eye in the hands of the man that almost destroyed his life. Well that just won't do, so like any good ferret he steals it back.

Colton was just standing around minding his own business when the announcement was made. Then all of a sudden, two men are barreling down on him and just when he thinks they are going to try and claim him, he notices they aren't looking at him but at the floor, about the same time that he feels something running up his leg. Colton thinks the two men are trying to claim the tiny ferret that is now sitting on his shoulder and the ferret doesn't want to be claimed. Since Colton isn't happy about being forced to mate, he can sympathize with the smaller man and gets rid of the brutes.

Once the two have escaped the chaos in the ballroom and Colton gets a look at Sly in his human form, the two can't deny the attraction they feel for each other. Sly has a lot of secrets and he isn't sure that anyone can really love the real him but he is willing to take a chance on Colton. After they mate, the two return to Colton's home in Mexico. Now comes the hard part, can the two learn to trust each other enough to make it through the trouble that is coming for Sly?

Being a fan of Buckbeak, I started laughing as soon as I saw the pairing for this story, however it just didn't quite live up to the hype. I had a hard time connecting to these characters, but especially Sly. He just seemed to flip-flop and whine so much and it got a little annoying. Colton was a saint to put up with Sly but I wanted to know more about Colton's brother Zion. Sly's ex and his family bring new meaning to the term DYSFUNCTIONAL! Oh, and I don't ever want Sly to buy me jewelry….I'm just saying.

One of the things that I really enjoy about this series are the strange couples that come from the forced matings and the different paths they take to find happiness. Don't tell anyone I said this, because I will deny it later, but this is also a series that you do not have to read in order, each book can stand on its own. So if you like to read about opposites attracting or prey falling for its food, then you don't want to miss this installment in the Midnight Matings series.
