For Robbie Russo, only one man has ever owned his heart, Kyler Christenson. The years at each other's sides never diminished his love for him, but with the rise to fame in their rock band, Black Heart Down, more than a few challenges hindered their relationship. Now, he's reached a crossroads, either he'll have all of Kyler, or he'll walk away from everything they've built together.
Kyler may be fearless on stage, but if there's one thing to send his heart crashing down, it's losing Robbie. When Robbie delivers his ultimatum, Kyler's willing to do what it takes for things work. But change doesn't happen quickly, and when he makes a terrible mistake, all their history together might not be enough to save their future.

BLACK HEART DOWN is the first book I've read by S. J. Frost and from the very first chapter I was hooked. Within the first page, she drew us directly into the conflict and set us along a journey of love, discovery, forgiveness, and growth.
Robbie Russo has been friends and lovers with Kyler Christenson ever since they first met in high school. At first put off by Kyler's abrupt and pushy nature, charm and charisma quickly won out. Things were good for a while, until their band, Black Heart Down hit it big. That's when their relationship took a turn which set them down a new path, one which drove a wedge between them. All of this is backstory woven in beautifully throughout the book.
The story we actually see play out on the page is one where Robbie and Kyler struggle to understand their own shortcomings, the mistakes they've made along the way and the issues deep within themselves they must resolve. In doing so, they realize how, in their own way, they are each responsible for the difficulties in their relationship. Watching them explore and unwrap their own emotions, freeing themselves of the baggage they had been carrying for a lifetime, I couldn't help but fly through the pages, impatient to find out how their story would end.
This story hit a true homerun for me. It touched on all of the key elements I love in a story and did so with finesse and artfulness. The characters are full and deep, their histories, emotions, motivations, and shortcomings believable, making them highly likable and relatable people. There are flaws in each of us and we seem them played out in both Robbie and Kyler. Second, the story line remained tightly centered around the love between Robbie and Kyler. While there were many bumps in their road to happiness, each moment in the story made sense, one event leading naturally into the next. The use of language was brilliant, each word chosen precisely and evoking beautiful pictures in my mind. That was particularly so with the sex scenes where Ms. Frost managed to burn the pages and my retinas while describing each sensation and emotion. There were no gratuitous sex scenes, each one pushing the story forward, but there was plenty of sex and it was very well written.
Now that I've read one of Ms. Frost's books, I am definitely planning on reading more. If you haven't, put the book BLACK HEART DOWN on your to-read list right away.
