I'm not sure how much an author can say in eighteen pages without concentrating solely on one part of the story. Maybe that is why I rarely pick extremely short books to kill my hours in the day. Ms Black chose short and to the point sentences with little explanations and quite a bit of action to set a base for what could be a great future novel.
There isn't much to it really. Chris needs new furniture, Ethan and Jackson are selling it and from there it's straight to the action. Honestly I felt a bit like I got dropped into an episode of the Twilight Zone. The whole setting just screamed for a shocking punch line. But nothing like that happened. It was an instant attraction and the beginning of something more.
The word count worked both in favor as well as against their tale, where little details made it raw and fast paced, quick development left plenty of room for not quite believable situations.
It was no more than a taste but certainly impressive.
