Hockey players, goddesses and sex...oh my! HOW TO WORSHIP A GODDESS by Stephanie Julian is a fun paranormal read oozing with sex and passion. Readers looking for a fresh paranormal novel that is an entertaining and sexy read should look no further.
Once upon a time, Lucy Aster was honored to be the Goddess of the Moon, but her importance as a goddess has since faded away. Now she runs a bar in the middle of nowhere for the lucani, her followers from the golden days of being a goddess. Life is calm, simple and she even gets to enjoy the occasional minor league hockey game. Really she's watching No. 17, the amazingly gorgeous Brandon Stevenson. She has wanted Brandon desperately since she first saw him on the ice. What she doesn't know is that Brandon has noticed her in the stands and wants her just as desperately as she wants him.
The first time they are alone together, not only do the gloves come off, but also the clothes. Brandon has no idea where this relationship is going, but Lucy does...absolutely nowhere. While they may share a few moments of mutual attraction, Lucy is an immortal goddess and Brandon is a human. But there is more to Brandon than meets the eye and he refuses to give up on Lucy without a fight.
The second installment in Julian's Forgotten Goddesses series, HOW TO WORSHIP A GODDESS is a fun, action packed adventure with great characters. Brandon is the attractive, yet unsuspecting hockey player that is thrown into this world of danger and supernatural forces. It's impossible not to love his controlling alpha qualities despite the fact that he is the weakest person in a magical and paranormal cast. You can easily find his ‘I protect what's mine' attitude romantic and arousing. He never plays the helpless human, even though that's what Lucy and her friends think of him. He was tough and constantly full of surprises.
Lucy was....not entirely what I expected from an ancient goddess. She was an interesting character because she seemed to go through many instances of doubt despite the fact that she was once an all-powerful goddess. I came to accept it as part of her character since the series really focuses on the fact that goddesses are not as important as they used to be. The dynamic between these two was certainly entertaining, because while Lucy was used to dominating everyone, Brandon became the first person to dominate her. She was somewhat lost in HOW TO WORSHIP A GODDESS and the fact that Brandon was the one telling her how it was going to be made their relationship entertaining.
Honestly, I would have enjoyed a few more moments of the two main characters getting to know each other and developing how they fell in love. Otherwise it just seemed like they only fell in love because they had lust and mutual attraction between them. While I didn't mind the extra doses of sexiness, many of the scenes were brilliantly written and simply scorching the pages, but I felt it just wasn't enough to add to the development of the characters or their relationship. It was hard to accept declarations of love when they hardly knew anything about each other because every time they were alone together they were having sex.
I have not read the first book in this installment, but can tell it's not absolutely necessary to do so in order to read HOW TO WORSHIP A GODDESS. Well, at least not yet. There is a solid cast of characters being developed and it's easy to see as this series grows, the previous installment will come to be required reading. At this point though, you can start with book two and catch up later. Ms Julian provides enough information to easily get you up to speed on her world's ‘ins and outs.'
On the whole, there were a few personal objections, but otherwise this was a very satisfying and entertaining novel. HOW TO WORSHIP A GODDESS gives you lots of action in and out of the bedroom and plenty of paranormal adventure. Fans looking for an excitingly erotic paranormal series should be on the lookout for Stephanie Julian's Forgotten Goddesses series...it will knock your socks off!
