What happened when the one person you never thought to find suddenly opens your eyes to a life you never knew you could have? In this smoldering addition to the 1 Night Stand franchise, one lucky woman is about to have her life changed by the man of her dreams.
Ginger Thistlewaite has become a client of Madame Evangeline under duress. Her friend filled in her application for 1 Night Stand, and now Ginger finds herself dreading the arrival of her blind date, who she is already convinced she doesn't want and certainly doesn't need. Her disdain only increases at the arrival of the tall, blonde surfer-esque man who declares himself Baird Kirkland, her date for the evening. Fed up, Ginger makes to leave—only to be literally swept off her feet by her new date, who is suddenly sporting dark wings, whispering that he is a demon, and promising to make Ginger's every dream come true.
But even Baird has no idea how true his words are. Because all her life, Ginger has dreamed of a pair of dark wings, and of flying through the night sky, completely uninhibited by the shackles of her daily life. And here is the one man who is able to release her and show her how to unleash her real potential…how can she say no? But when the sun rises again, will these two be able to hold onto the magic that brought them together?
For a 30-page, one-sitting read, both Ginger and Baird were expertly described so that I at once felt like I had known them both for far longer and really wanted to learn more. Ginger has convinced herself that her grueling work schedule and lonely home are precisely what she wants out of life, and uses her professionalism as a disguise to hide her isolation and the feeling that she's never been quite like those around her.
Baird, on the other hand, has been playing a role for so long himself that he refuses to accept any of Ginger's excuses. The tension between these two was combustible from the outset and their chemistry only increased until I was worried the pages were going to be singed.
I think what I enjoyed most about this book was how right it felt when Ginger and Baird were together. Though they weren't a natural fit at their first meeting, as soon as Ginger was flying in Baird's arms, you could feel that they completed each other. Ginger presented Baird with a challenge, something he hasn't enjoyed in a terribly long time, and in turn, he explained the reason for her dreams and showed her how to set her true nature free. It made for a thrilling read, and while the story is sizzling enough, their connection made all the events of their evening together that much more memorable.
It was a bit of a surprise to learn that ONE NIGHT TO FLY is Gina Lamm's debut, as this is one expertly written short story. I'll be following her future projects eagerly; someone who can write so much passion, humor and heart into such a small amount of space is absolutely an author worth watching!
