Book 4 of Search for Love
Contemporary Romance

Once a doctor, Zack goes on the road with his Harley to leave the past behind and find a future. He lost his wife and unborn son. He couldn't save Kay and the powerlessness was as difficult to deal with as his grief. Growing up on a ranch that his parents later lost, Zack heads for a life that once brought him peace. After selling his practice in LA, he finds temporary jobs on western ranches until the work is finished. Then he moves on. Until he arrives at the Rising Star.

Lucy McIntyre's father interviewed Zack over the phone. But he trusted Lucy's instincts and gave her the job of checking the man's references as well as doing a face to face interview. Adopted, always grateful for the family who accepted her no matter what, Lucy never expects the sizzling magnetic pull to Zackary Burke. Almost immediately she realizes he's a complicated man. But she has her own secrets. Because of a riding accident when she was seventeen, she can't have children. And in the middle of Zack's interview she receives an unusual call from the family lawyer. When she drives to his office in Long Brush, she finds a photo of two baby girls. The lawyer believes she has a twin. Lucy is as loyal to her family as they are to her. She doesn't want to hurt them or make them think they haven't given her enough...that they aren't enough. Should she find this sister who might be a twin?

ALWAYS HER COWBOY is a sweet romance that left me feeling all warm and gooey inside. I feel like Karen Rose Smith has an uncanny ability to make me believe that everything will work out and that we all deserve our HEA. I know when I sit down and read her books, I'm in for something sweet, romantic, and emotionally charged, and ALWAYS HER COWBOY was no exception.

Zach Burke is running from his tragic past and winds up on a ranch in Wyoming. There he meets Lucy McIntyre, the daughter of the ranch owner, and his life is turned upside down. He's been numb since he lost his wife and unborn child, but Lucy is making him feel for the first time since he lost his family. He doesn't want to feel, but despite his best efforts, he can't seem to stay away from Lucy and move on to the next job.

Lucy has always loved her family and her roots at the Rising Star ranch. She too knows what it means to lose something that you always thought you wanted, so she's not looking to give her heart to anyone besides her family again. But Zach stirs something in her and makes her long for what she thought was impossible. Zach unfortunately is fighting her every step of the way. Lucy will have to decide if she will take him for right now or risk never having him at all.

This is a great story. Full of love, hope and inspiration, you really can't help but feel good after reading it.

Zach and Lucy have such a strong connection, it was obvious to everyone around them, despite their best efforts to fight it. I loved that they both brought out the best in the other and made them stronger to face the uncertainties they both had about their futures.

The plot was interesting and kept me reading from beginning to end. I sat down and didn't lift my head until I was at the end of the book. Zach and Lucy had a few false starts as far as their relationship went, so I wasn't sure how it was going to end. I felt like I couldn't stop reading until I knew for sure.

ALWAYS HER COWBOY is the fourth book in the Search for Love series, but you don't need to read all of the books to read this one. You will not miss any essential elements to the story if you hadn't read the other books in the series.

ALWAYS HER COWBOY is a sweet romance, with a very emotional storyline and a positive and inspirational message. Reading it felt like balm to the soul, and I didn't want it to end!

BOOK INTERVIEW on December 2011
Interview by Rho

Ms. Smith, it's so nice to have you here with us again. This time we'll be talking about book four in the Search for Love series, ALWAYS HER COWBOY. It's always such a treat to read your interviews, so I can't wait to hear what you have to say about this book.

Thanks, Rho! I love being interviewed by you. I always like how creative your questions are. They delve right into the heart of the book. So, fire away!

Q: ALWAYS HER COWBOY was set on a ranch in Wyoming. This is much different than the L.A. setting of other books in the Search for Love Series. What was your motivation behind the change in scenery?

When I planned the Search For Love series with both revised and updated titles as well as new books, I decided to try to please a variety of readers. Each is a different type of romance. Many of my readers like "cowboy" books. I am always challenged to find a new twist to life on a ranch. I truly love the west. One of my favorite research trips led me to the wild mustangs roaming The Big Horns. So I wanted to add that earthy, almost primitive yet innocent flavor to the Search For Love series.

Q: Lucy was adopted and never doubted the love of her parents. But she was reluctant to search for her birth family. Please give us some insight to help us understand her better.

I've dealt with adoption in many of my romances but usually from the parents' point of view. Parents who are childless are so joyous and grateful when they can actually adopt. So I wanted to turn it around and listen to a child's point of view. Some children do want to search. But there are others like Lucy who are truly happy with their adopted families and don't feel the need for more. Maybe they don't want the nitty-gritty of knowing more. At the beginning of ALWAYS HER COWBOY, that's Lucy's perspective. But it changes and grows in the course of the novel and into the next novella in the Search For Love series which is her twin's story, CASSIDY'S COWBOY.

Q: Zach is a doctor and has to perform an emergency tracheotomy out in the middle of the ranch. What kind of research went in to make the reluctant doctor so believable?

I've had a lot of personal experience with the medical community so I feel I know doctors fairly well! I've also researched doctors for many books--from doctors who served in war situations to physicians in city and small town hospitals. Ingenuity and intuition are integral to a doctor's skill set. Zack was trained in internal medicine. Faced with a life and death situation, he knew what to do.

Q: Zach is a drifter with a traumatic past, while Lucy is a woman firm in her roots. What makes them perfect for each other?

Zack didn't start off in life as a drifter. He once knew a loving family and how peaceful life could be on a ranch. He doesn't realize it when he starts drifting (which is really an escape from his losses) that he is drawn back to that peaceful life surrounded by family which Lucy has always known. That's one of the reasons why they are perfect for each other.

Q: There were many scenes in this book that were heart-wrenching, although never leaving me without hope for Zach and Lucy's chances at their happily-ever-after. Which scene was the hardest for you to write and why?

The toughest scene to write was the one at Cassidy's ranch when Lucy leads Zack to come to terms with his loss and pain. I've lost loved ones and sometimes that grief is something we avoid at all costs. Zack has been doing that but can't escape it any longer. On Lucy's part, she wants to help so badly. But the most she can do is just let Zack finally feel.

Q: It's now five years later, where do you see Zach and Lucy?

Five years later I see Zack as part of a group practice in the fictional town of Long Brush. He and Lucy have built a house on The Rising Star Ranch, join in ranch work and enjoy every moment of being with the McIntyre family as well as with Lucy's twin sister Cassidy whenever they can. They have adopted two children, a brother and sister who needed a home and the love they can give.

Q; If I understand correctly, ALWAYS HER COWBOY had been written years ago but never published. Tell us more about that.

When I began writing, I finished manuscripts. I completed 13 manuscripts in the six years before I was published. After I was published, I'd send off a proposal, but I would keep writing until I got word whether a publisher wanted a manuscript or not. I did that with ALWAYS HER COWBOY originally called A Family For Zack. I had finished all but the last chapter when I learned the publisher considered this book and its companion to have too many serious elements. (There are always trends that come and go.) I have been prolific throughout my career and had the next proposals ready. When I sold those, I put Zack's story aside. I had truly forgotten about it until I began e-publishing and considered how it and its sequel would be perfect for the Search For Love series.

Q: Has there ever been a character whose story has just been churning around in your head just dying to get out? Which character was that?

Gina from The Texas Billionaire's Baby (Silhouette Special
Edition) churned in my head for many years before I wrote her story.
She was the victim of a date-rape. It's a reunion romance filled with hope that love can heal.

Q: One of the things that I have noticed about your books that I have read is that the emotional connection between the characters is amazingly strong. What's your secret behind getting those connections to come across on the page.

When I choose characters, something about their storyline has to be personal to me. I can research until my mind is full of information, but if I don't write about something I feel strongly about (like motherhood in my baby books) or personally experienced, writing would only be words on a page. I try to put feelings on the page.

Q: Please tell us what's next in the Search for Love Series.

Next in my Search For Love series is CASSIDY'S COWBOY. This is a novella that's definitely a crossover between romance and women's fiction. Cassie and Lucy who are twins decide to enlist Gillian (from NATHAN'S VOW) to help search for their dad. But in the meantime, Ben O'Donnell (nephew of Cassie's foreman) and his nine-year-old daughter Julie visit Cassie's ranch for the summer. As Cassie falls in love, her deepest secret is threatened. As Ben falls in love, he has to shed the armor around his heart to find happily-ever-after.

Q: Please tell us about any other upcoming projects you'd like to share with us.

In July of 2012, THE CEO'S UNEXPECTED PROPOSAL will be released by Harlequin Special Edition. In this romance, my heroine Mikala is a music therapist who helps the hero's son recover from trauma. This is book 3 in my Reunion Brides series. And in August, book 4, will be available. Riley O'Rourke and Brenna McDougall come from feuding families who tore them apart in the past. The night of their fifteen year high school reunion, Brenna and Riley truly reunite. Almost a year later, Brenna shows up on Riley's doorstep with his infant son in her arms. This former marine hero and bridal gown designer heroine make sparks fly when dealing with their families and each other!

Thank you so much for this wonderful interview. As always your answers and so informative and delightful. I appreciate you being here and I hope we get to do this again soon!
