SUMMARY
California, 1851. The Sierras are ruled by a band of marauding Indians, and Major Huntley Ashbury is determined to corral them.

Huntley's solitary existence as the biggest trader in the foothills is destroyed when he runs into Whitman Whitney, a half-breed physician with a talented knack for curing hysterical women—and men. Together they rein in the most savage barbarian of them all. Belle Pennington emerges from the forest with nothing left to lose but her Chinese book that tells stories of ribald encounters.

As Huntley and Whit clash impressing Belle with their skills, their Battalion ventures into the wild to discover the Indians' stronghold. Whit has only known the touch of men before, and his peculiar medical expertise astonishes and unites the three in their journey.

But it is Belle's restless spirit the men must conquer in the deep grassy valley of the Yosemite.

Hmmm...where do I begin with this review? For starters, I'll say that Karen Mercury is a truly talented author who knows how to take history and put it into a fictional aspect that blends well with the characters and plot line. However, I was a little confused in the beginning with the way the story jumped around a bit. I found myself trying to stay into the center of the story, but to no avail, as I was often confused by the events. But, I never let that deter me anyway when trying to give the author a chance, as I feel every book should be given the chance. I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome when I pushed forward!

I loved all the characters in this story, both the enemies and the heroes/heroines. Sweet Huntley. I loved his character. Bless him, he wanted to find happiness in his little town, but with no women, save the squaws, he had to travel to San Francisco to find that release and pleasure. There, during one of his campaign meetings, he meets the handsomely devilish Dr. Whitney Whitman. Another amazing character that you can't help but fall in love with!

The attraction between the two men is apparent almost instantly, but Huntley's never experienced that kind of thing before. What's he to do with his feelings for the sexy doctor? When the doctor takes a chance on HIS feelings for Huntley, he's left with an outraged man...or is he?

When the two team up and push forth through the frontier to find the Indians, Huntley finds himself face to face with a beautiful Indian squaw who tries to kill him. Taking her back to Doc when he shatters her arm, they two men are surprised at what they find underneath all that dirt and grime covering the beautiful Belle.

But the ending is surprising! The two men, quickly best friends, find themselves both with feelings beyond their control, for each other AND for the beautiful Belle. Who will find love in the midst of the Indian territory? Who will fill the void of pleasures forsaken in the confines of privacy? Which man will the beautiful golden lotus choose?

Reading this book was enjoyable, but, as stated before, I was a bit confused in the beginning. Because of that I feel I can't go higher than a 4 Book rating. I am happy to say though, that once I pushed forward, I was swept away to a land of forbidden desires between two best friends and a maid. I laughed in some parts, in others, I found myself simply smiling at the outcome. And the ending...well, the ending is an unexpected one and I am anxious to go back and try again with Ms. Mercury's other books in this series.
