For years, Rob Frietag has resisted anything resembling a true emotional connection, preferring instead to explore life, and his own desires, without committing to anyone for very long. The reason remains known only to a few, among them Jack Gordon, his college cohort in female conquests, and life-long friend. At thirty-seven, while he is close to achieving his career goal, head chef at a five-star restaurant in Chicago, he is still very much alone.

After an intensely emotional relationship with Suzanne Baxter in Ann Arbor, Blake's heart is left shattered. Completely broken by what he believes was his one true love, he arrives at a Chicago food and beer festival, prepared to drink his sorrow away. When the two men meet, their lives change forever. But time is of the essence. When Rob acknowledges his true feelings, he will stop at nothing to keep them together, including finding a surrogate mother for the child Blake so desperately wants.

Lila Warren is recovering from a nasty divorce, needs cash and believes carrying their baby will fulfill in her in ways her marriage never did. None of them could suspect that the connection they share would provide the final emotional key to their life-long puzzle. When Rob's secret is revealed, time becomes the one luxury they don't have, setting in motion a chain of events that destroys the fragile illusion of happiness for them, and everyone who loves them.

This book did it for me. I think my heart broke into a million pieces and I'm still trying to understand the twists and turns that this book had and the reason why it ended the way it did. Beware, you should have a whole box of Kleenex by your side because you will need it from beginning to end.

Rob and Blake are two very strong alpha males, but both are so broken that you want to fix them so they could be happy. Only, they both deal with their lives in different ways but that's the beauty of it as the person they eventually become is what makes them whole.

Rob was a young man who did not want any attachments because of his illness, so in college, with Jack Gordon's help, they went through girls like changing clothes. Then he met one woman and fell in love but she left him and that was when he vowed not to fall in love again. After that he met two men but never totally gave himself to them till the day he met Blake.

Blake on the other hand was the rock for not only Sara, his sister, but to Suzanne. He tried to be there when she needed him the most after the final beating she got from her husband. But he got his heart broken when she insisted their relationship could not work because she could not move on with that part of her life. She remembered too much of what her husband did to her when Blake was around her. After a drinking frenzy at the festival he met the person that would soon be his love of his life--Rob.

Rob and Blake truly were meant for each other but somehow they kept struggling in their relationship. Rob was not being truthful to Blake and Blake knew that something was wrong. Then Lila entered their lives.

Rob, Blake and Lila each had their flaws but they made a beautiful ménage family. The passion that Rob and Blake share is hot. There sex scenes are steamy and while I'm not really into the m/m concept, but in this book it just seemed right. Then when they add Lila in, it just seemed perfect. The emotions in this book generated is made me unable to put this book down. I just wanted to keep reading and see where Rob, Blake and Lila were heading.

ESSENCE OF TIME totally left me devastated, heartbroken but with a different view in life. Live life as if tomorrow is the last, never waste time no matter the circumstance.

If you have not started reading this series, Stewart Realty Company, please do so as you will not be disappointed. This book really gives you a different perspective on not only Rob and Blake's lives but also Sara, Jack and Suzanne. I have reviewed all the four books in this series and it was a pleasure reviewing this one. I can't wait ‘til book five comes out.
